Résumé:
During his tenure as Chief Royal Architect (1539-1588) in the "Golden Age" of the Ottoman Empire, Sinan designed hundreds of structures that helped create the renowned urban image of Istanbul, particularly mosques with seemingly weightless, light-filled centralized domes that have been compared with developments in Renaissance Italy. His distinctive architectural idiom left its imprint over a vast empire extending from the Danube to the Tigris, and he became the most celebrated of all Ottoman architects. In this lavishly illustrated, major new assessment of Sinan's oeuvre, Gülru Necipoglu challenges standard views of Sinan as a "Turkish Michelangelo" driven solely by an insatiable urge for artistic experimentation. Her innovative analysis shows that Sinan's rich variety of mosque designs sprang from a process of negotiation between the architect and his elite patrons, both men and women. Defined though they were by social and territorial hierarchies and associated notions of identity, memory, and decorum, Sinan's mosques simultaneously shaped these conceptions. "The Age of Sinan" draws on a wealth of primary sources to reveal the chief architect's monuments as bearers of previously unrecognized dimensions of meaning. A sophisticated study of the cultural and social history of Ottoman architecture, interpreting the works of a seminal figure in the early modern eastern Mediterranean world, it is must-reading for scholars and students of art history and other fields with an interest in the Ottoman Empire.

Résumé:
"20:21 - Emerging Hong Kong Architects" presents a spectrum of 20 architectural works from 20 Hong Kong architects selected from an open competition "Emerging Hong Kong Architects" organized by Hong Kong Institute of Architects in April 2003. Architects participating in the competition were asked to respond to 'architecture' amidst this complex 21st century where multi-disciplinary frontiers are more obscure than ever, space topographies are transforming, and active hybridization is in the making. In the book, the architects write about their aspirations in their profession, present their views on architecture, and explore future scenarios; each of different modulations and sensibilities expressed in their own architectural language, and some articulated through the exploration process with various art forms. In a joint effort to navigate through the vista of architecture, this is the first publication from Hong Kong Institute of Architects bringing together a multitude of the established, the upcoming and the heretofore unknown young architects in Hong Kong. Publication in English and Chinese.

Résumé:
Straightforward photography, a restrained color scheme, simple texts set in a functional typeface: these are the formal elements that German graphic designer Michael Engelmann drew on to create an unmistakable pictorial language for posters. Engelmann came to advertising self-taught, with a background in American advertising practice. In the 1950s, he set about expunging any trace of empty bourgeois enthusiasm for advertising by applying a strictly conceptual working approach. In his posters for Pirelli, The Philadelphia Enquirer, Renault, or Roth Händle, images and ideas came together in a way as simple as it was compelling, creating signs of great associative force. His was a highly regarded contribution to graphic design's breakthrough into the age of mass communication; it introduced wit and a sense of using resources economically. "Poster Collection 10" brings together numerous posters created by Engelmann, who died prematurely at the age of 38.

Résumé:
The second volume tracing the history of Britain's most famous cinema circuit continues the story from 1942 when J. Arthur Rank took control after the death of its founder, Oscar Deutsch. Odeon expanded rapidly and was eventually merged with Rank's other circuit, Gaumont cinemas, as part of The Rank Organisation. The book shows in great detail how Odeon adapted to the wide screen and roadshow eras, built new cinemas and converted existing ones to two and three screens, but went into a sharp decline until the turnaround in cinemaattendances from 1985, fuelled by the arrival of American-style multiplex.By entering the race to build multiplexes and further subdividing its older sites, Odeon reasserted itself to become the largest chain in the UK. The book is copiously illustrated with 16 pages in colour and includes a list of the films given an Odeon circuit release from 1942 to 1959 and a complete record of all the cinemas ever operated by Odeon until it was sold by Rank in 2000.

Résumé:
In 1970 Robert Smithson (1938-1973), one of the most innovative and provocative artists of the twentieth century, created the landmark earthwork "Spiral Jetty" at Rozel Point on Utah's Great Salt Lake. This dramatic and highly influential work forms a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide and stretches out counter-clockwise into the lake's translucent red water. Composed of black basalt rocks and earth, the sculpture comprises the materials of its location: mud, salt crystals, rocks, water. The contributors to this comprehensive publication consider the sculpture in relation to its eponymous companions - a text work and a film. These essays situate this renowned series of works alongside Smithson's critical writings, proposals, drawings, sources, and models. Amply illustrated with archival and new photographs of the Jetty and many comparative illustrations, this book makes evident why Smithson's art and writings have had such a powerful impact on art and art theory for over thirty years.
