Résumé:
Because United Colors of Benetton’s core business is clothing, the contemporary culture of design plays an important role in the group’s activity, including its corporate architecture. Benetton’s international brand style - combining colour, energy, and practicality - can be seen first in its buildings. In 1964, long before it was fashionable for designers to employ brand-name architects, Lucianno Benetton chose two very young and ambitious architects, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, to design his first textile factory. This project marked the beginning of a vision of architecture aimed at enhancing the workplace: an architecture where image and substance come together. This unique book, brilliantly designed by Massimo Vignelli, brings together all of the Benetton buildings, including plans, 500 colour illustrations, superb photographs by Antonia Mulas, an interview with Luciano Benetton, and a chapter dedicated to Tadao Ando’s Fabrica building. With text in English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.

Résumé:
Since the opening in 1997 of the Guggenheim Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, museum architecture has enjoyed worldwide attention on an unprecedented scale. That single watershed project demonstrated to municipalities that architecture has the power to transform the image of an entire city, thus making the turn of the twenty-first century the unofficial age of the museum building. New Museums examines the boom in high-design museum projects in detail, beginning with the Guggenheim Bilbao’s groundbreaking role in the development of contemporary museum architecture. It continues with a beautifully illustrated tour of 30 examples of the most innovative and exciting museum architecture around the world, including Tadao Ando’s Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Zaha Hadid’s Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Renzo Piano’s Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and many others.

Résumé:
Once the bastion of the haute bourgeoisie, the town house has now been embraced by families with young children, single urban professionals, and retired couples, all looking for more comfortable city or suburban living. Architect Alexander Gorlin explores an array of diverse town house designs (often referred to by different terms in different parts of the country) that carry this familiar symbol of architectural innovation and refinement into the twenty-first century. "Creating the new American town house" features cutting-edge town houses that each draw from architectural tradition while achieving originality by both breaking from and adhering to the limitations of the town house form. Within the typical five-story frame and two parallel walls presented here are livable design solutions to the constraints of this classic housing type. Ranging from sites in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, each of the buildings featured in "Creating the new American town house" is designed by such celebrated architects as Steven Ehrlich, Hugh Newell Jacobson, Stanley Saitowitz, and 1100 Architect. Each project is illustrated with full-color photography that showcases the interior design as well as plans and drawings. Alexander Gorlin’s text continues the discourse begun in his "The new American town house", surveying the adaptation of this beloved urban dwelling to the demands of a new century.

-- This publication accompanies exhibitions in two international photography bienniales. Le Mois de la Photo à Paris 2004 and Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal 2005. The primal image referred to is the photograph recording the completion of Canada's national railway in 1885: "the driving of the last spike". Supported by a wide variety of historical and contemporary documentation, Lavoie shows how this apparently straightforward historical record was used to create the notion of Canada. By looking at the countless reproductions, copies and caricatures of this primal image he dissects the deliberate and ideological construction of nationhood. Profusely illustrated with photographs, film stills, posters and political cartoons from over 100 years. Produced in collaboration with the McCord Museum. In English and French.

Today, Thor Hansen is little known but from the mid-1950s to the end of the 1960s, the Danish émigré was a popular artist, designer and tireless promoter of the craft movement in Canada. He carried out his mission via corporate industry, independent of government support. Largely self-taught, he completed his most important work as art director for the British- American Oil Company. This book accompanies an exhibition at the Textile Museum of Canada.

If there is something in architecture that is difficult to describe then it is space, but it is in the spatial quality of architecture and its use that its essence is encapsulated. There is, however, surprising little evidence of this in current architectural debate, because of all the consideration for visual appearance. In "Revisions of space", architect Dick van Gameren shows how the spatial quality of architecture is connected with densification and programmatic diversity: in buildings, around buildings and in the urban context. He does this by using a selection of unusual historic examples and his own work. The book could be described as a manual for architecture - how one can look at architecture and how, as a designer, to deal with it - as well as a personal appeal for more consideration for one of the essential components of architecture. Thanks to the choice of historical examples, this book can also be read as an unconventional cross-section of the history of architecture.
