Architect Alexander Gorlin explores an array of diverse town house designs (often referred to by different terms in different parts of the country) that carry this familiar symbol of architectural innovation and refinement into the twenty-first century. "Creating the new American town house" features cutting-edge town houses that each draw from architectural tradition while achieving originality by both breaking from and adhering to the limitations of the town house form. Within the typical five-story frame and two parallel walls presented here are livable design solutions to the constraints of this classic housing type. By looking at the countless reproductions, copies and caricatures of this primal image he dissects the deliberate and ideological construction of nationhood. Profusely illustrated with photographs, film stills, posters and political cartoons from over 100 years. Produced in collaboration with the McCord Museum. In English and French.

If there is something in architecture that is difficult to describe then it is space, but it is in the spatial quality of architecture and its use that its essence is encapsulated. There is, however, surprising little evidence of this in current architectural debate, because of all the consideration for visual appearance. In "Revisions of space", architect Dick van Gameren shows how the spatial quality of architecture is connected with densification and programmatic diversity: in buildings, around buildings and in the urban context. He does this by using a selection of unusual historic examples and his own work. The book could be described as a manual for architecture - how one can look at architecture and how, as a designer, to deal with it - as well as a personal appeal for more consideration for one of the essential components of architecture. Thanks to the choice of historical examples, this book can also be read as an unconventional cross-section of the history of architecture.

There is, however, surprising little evidence of this in current architectural debate, because of all the consideration for visual appearance. In "Revisions of space", architect Dick van Gameren shows how the spatial quality of architecture is connected with densification and programmatic diversity: in buildings, around buildings and in the urban context. He does this by using a selection of unusual historic examples and his own work. The book could be described as a manual for architecture - how one can look at architecture and how, as a designer, to deal with it - as well as a personal appeal for more consideration for one of the essential components of architecture. Thanks to the choice of historical examples, this book can also be read as an unconventional cross-section of the history of architecture.
