Résumé:
globalized society, and it will continue to do so in the future. Already today, the demands of the job no longer correspond to the profile on which classical architectural training is based. In this context, the question that arises is no longer that of the building alone, but also that of a changed approach to building and new pathways within design itself. This is where Explorations comes in: internationally celebrated authors, all of whom are professors as well and hence directly involved in the processes they describe, address the principal topics of contemporary architectural research. Taking the works of their own design studios as examples they offer concrete discussions of those topics and place them in the context of applied research and practice. Short and accessible essays on the most important architectural movements of the twentieth century clarify the relationship between the subjects discussed and canonical architectural research.

Résumé:
This charmingly illustrated volume showcases iconic structures from the world’s most important and most architecturally interesting cities—sure to appeal to amateur enthusiasts, aspiring architects, and even professionals. This book presents unique visual profiles of the most iconic buildings in the world, from twenty-five of the most important and most visited cities. Featuring remarkably detailed line drawings elegantly rendered in black and white, these captivating artworks and the accompanying text help the reader learn each structure’s history and understand what makes them so visually and culturally iconic. With the aim of exploring and communicating the deeper qualities of architecture by looking at it from new angles and presenting it in fresh and engaging ways, the illustrations are distinctive and elegant—inspired by Studio Esinam’s Landmarks and Elevations series of prints. Among the buildings included are such global icons as New York’s Chrysler Building, London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Sydney Opera House, along with lesser-known yet equally outstanding structures like the Centre Pompidou in Paris or Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

Résumé:
The election and inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the president of the United States of America have provoked an unprecedented intensity of reflection in virtually all academic disciplines. The professions of architecture and planning, faced with the phenomenon of a self-proclaimed "builder-in-chief," have found themselves facing a series of fundamental questions, both old and new. How should we think, teach, and practice under a developer presidency? What sort of walls will we and won't we choose to build? What are our commitments of critical thought, and what obligations should we turn our energies toward? The essays gathered in And Now explore the nature of architecture's many long-standing complicities. Architecture coordinates colossal expenditures (of material, of energy); it scripts forms of labor (in its construction, in its operation, and in the programs it houses); and it is both a repository and generator of capital. Architecture participates, centrally, in defining modes of life, whether for the privileged or the dispossessed-designing and building the boundaries between the "haves" and the "have-nots." This fundamental reality of architectural practice need not inspire either nihilism or defensiveness but should rather be understood, quite simply, as the terrain we navigate. Naming these complicities and the injustices they perpetuate is a first step toward addressing them.

Résumé:
"Share: Conversations about contemporary architecture. The Nordic countries" is the first book in a new global series of investigative interviews about the modern architectural process. Initiated and undertaken by the Norway-based Canadian architect Todd Saunders, the Nordic Countries edition features interviews with 30 architectural practices from Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland. With more than 25 years of professional practice behind him, Saunders has always been fascinated by the role of creativity in everyday practice and the potential power alluded to it. In a series of interviews undertaken over the past year, Saunders has queried the changing role of the architect, the challenges of contemporary practice – especially the impact of the pandemic – and the ways in which architects can achieve the right balance in the relationship between site, client, craft and innovation. Presented as a series of candid conversations between architect and architect, the book offers insights that go beyond the polished histories that usually make it into print. In particular, the interviews explore the role of challenge and failure, conflict and mistakes, chance and coincidence; all familiar aspects of the architectural process yet elements that tend to be glossed over in conventional monographs. The Nordic countries edition will be followed by companion volumes that explore the work of architects in North and South America, central Europe and the Far East.
