Résumé:
Once only a vague metaphor to describe the relationship between different social groups, the term “social distance” has acquired a precise meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the mandatory minimum distance for face-to-face contact between persons, and can vary slightly depending on the jurisdiction. Rather than asserting a diagnosis of our contemporary global emergency, this issue offers perspectives from architectural history and theory. From the great plague of Venice to cholera in the industrialising city, and from the human placenta to the 1960s bubble or the office of today, here a broad range of reflections on contagion, disease, and health can be found.

David Senior, bibliographer at the Museum of Modern Art Library in New York, selected a wide range of exhibition-related ephemera – invitations, flyers and posters from the 1960s to the present – and presents them here as an historically overlooked but integral aspect of exhibitions. Often the first point of contact between the audience and artist, such items form part of an essential lexicon for graphic designers, curators, art historians and anyone interested in the event-based nature of showing art. Filled with full-colour reproductions of numerous examples from the MoMA collection, the book includes new essays and analysis by Angie Keefer, Clive Phillpot and Will Holder, among others.

Résumé:
This book takes an in-depth look at the social lives of five objects commonly found in the public spaces of New York City and its suburbs, revealing how our interactions with such material things are our primary point of contact with the social, political, and economic forces that shape city life. Drawing on groundbreaking fieldwork and a wealth of original interviews, Mike Owen Benediktsson shows how we are in the midst of things whose profound social role often goes overlooked. This publication demonstrates how the material realm is one of immediacy, control, inequality, and unpredictability, and how these factors frustrate the ability of designers, planners, and regulators to shape human behavior.

Résumé:
Aglaia Konrad’s photographic work probes the social, cultural, economic, political, and historical parameters that inform architecture and urbanism. 'Japan Works' is the result of her journey through Japan in the autumn of 2019. Using a pre-compiled list of places with exceptional architecture, Konrad took thousands of photos in Tokyo, Itoigawa, Kyoto, Nagoya and Osaka. In addition to mostly iconic, post-war Metabolist architecture, Konrad also took a large number of photos of nonspecific architectural moments and infrastructure that, with the same intensity, give their own impression of the architectural landscape in Japan. Free associations of full-page photographs alternate with contact sheets documenting her itinerary. These are informed by postscript glosses written by architect and critic Julian Worrall.

The shipping container is all around: whizzing by on the highway, trundling past on rails, unloading behind a big box store even as you shop there, clanking on the docks just out of sight…. 90% of the goods and materials that move around the globe do so in shipping containers. It is an absolutely ubiquitous object, even if most of us have no direct contact with it. But what is this thing? Where has it been, and where is it going? Craig Martin's book illuminates the “development of containerization”-including design history, standardization, aesthetics, and a surprising speculative discussion of the futurity of shipping containers. - See more at: http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/shipping-container-9781501303142/#sthash.2H0oxVN8.dpuf

Rotterdams West 8 is not only one of the largest, but also one of the best-known and most active design firms working in Europe today in the field of "urban design and landscape architecture." The phrase suggests the firms strongly interdisciplinary orientation between landscape architecture and town planning. Its projects are provocative, avant-garde in the typically Dutch manner, and not afraid of contact with popular culture. They were created in close collaboration with such architects as Richard Rogers, Steven Holl, Dominique Perrault, Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, and many others. The founder and director of the firm and its most highly visible figure is Adriaan Geuze, who is the author of this book.

Résumé:
Despite the rich discourse surrounding it and the dynamic practice that it engendered, the photographic avant-garde in Japan only existed for a brief period during the 1920s and ’30s. Yet it also contributed to the continuation of the production of radical visual arts and played a key role in the education of a post-war generation of Japanese artists who came of age in the 1950s and ’60s. Initially centred around Osaka and the Kansai region, the movement was inspired by contact with the work of photographers and surrealists overseas, at first through magazines and photobooks and later by touring exhibitions in Japan. This catalogue presents an impressive visual history of the movement.

Résumé:
In 1949, the photographer Lucien Hervé (1910–2007) took a picture of an innovative apartment building in Marseille, France, and sent it to the building’s architect, Le Corbusier (1887–1965). Le Corbusier responded by asking Hervé to become his official photographer. This book recounts the collaboration between these Modernists. The author takes the reader on a tour of sixteen of Le Corbusier’s most iconic buildings using Hervé’s edited sheets of contact prints as visual guides. These sheets, which became an effective tool in the collaborative dissemination of Le Corbusier’s work, capture Hervé’s dynamic perspectives and dramatic use of light. His sequencing of the individual prints creates an exhilarating rhythm that showcases the architect’s novel forms and materials.
