Résumé:
'The Exhibitionist: Journal on Exhibition Making' is an anthology of the first 12 issues of the journal about contemporary curating that bears the same name. Established in 2009 as a forum for critical reflection on exhibition-making and curatorial practice, The Exhibitionist has always defined itself as “by curators, for curators.” Modeled after the iconic French film journal Cahiers du cinéma, The Exhibitionist has served a critical role in examining current curatorial practices by focusing specifically on the exhibition format as a site of experimentation and inquiry. The Exhibitionist has historicized, analyzed and critiqued a phenomenon it is itself symptomatic of—the rise of the curator since the 1960s, the ensuing explosion of curatorial creativity and the growing fascination with the discipline of curating.

With this volume, 306090 launches a new series of books. In this volume mixing contemporary building projects with commentary and criticism, interviews, studios and student work, 306090 takes on one of the taboos of contemporary architecture: decoration. Daring to talk about a phenomenon that is all around, but has been unspeakable throughout the 20th century; this volume of 306090 is as indispensable as previous titles addressing emerging trends in design, planning, landscape and education. "Decoration" contains a mix of work, 'from every angle' of the ideological spectrum, and from a diverse group of contributors, including students, architects and professionals, as well as established minds in practice and pedagogy. "Decoration" includes contributions from Jesse Reiser, Kent Bloomer, Kengo Kuma, Nina Rappaport, and Meredith Warner.

Résumé:
In 1968, toward the end of a decade that witnessed civil rights protests, the escalation of the war in Vietnam, and an expanded notion of artistic practice (epitomized by "Happenings"), Yvonne Rainer presented her evening-length work, The Mind is a Muscle. A choreographed, multipart performance for seven dancers, interspersed with film and text, this major work was built upon a backbone of variations on Rainer's dance solo, Trio A. In this extended illustrated essay exploring The Mind is a Muscle, Catherine Wood examines the political and media context in which Rainer chose to use the dance-theatre situation as her medium and analyzes Rainer's radical approach to image-making in live form. Catherine Wood is Curator of contemporary art/performance at Tate Modern.

Résumé:
As Aaron Betsky notes in his introductory essay, that while Guallart is an active member of what has been called emergent architecture, his practice goes further, generating a body of work that emerges from both physical and social – both real and digital – structures. While the architect himself suggests that the end purpose of architecture is not (solely) to build, but also to define environments where human life can be organised. To support these observations, such projects as Denia Mountain, the Spanish Pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010, the Keelung Maritime Plaza and Fugee Port in Taiwan, the Cambrils Sea Apartments and the Sociopolis Masterplan, Valencia are examined. Seventeen works and projects are presented in total, accompanied by essays, texts, photographs and elaborate technical drawings. Texts in English/Chinese

Résumé:
Although appropropriation is often associated with the 1980s practice of such artists as Peter Halley, Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince, and Cindy Sherman, as well as the critical discourse of postmodernism and the simulacral theory of Jean Baudrillard, appropriation’s significance for art is not limited by that cultural and political moment. In an expanded art-historical frame, this book recontextualizes avant-garde photomontage, the Duchampian readymade, and the Pop image among such alternative precursors as Francis Picabia, Bertolt Brecht, Guy Debord, Akasegawa Genpei, Dan Graham, Cildo Meireles, and Martha Rosler. In the recent work of many artists, including Mike Kelley, Glenn Ligon, Pierre Huyghe, and Aleksandra Mir, among others, appropriation is central to their critique of the contemporary world and vision for alternative futures.

Résumé:
SYSTEMS gives the first comprehensive overview of Jeanne van Heeswijk’s socially engaged artistic practice from the past decade. The book presents models for the design of social spaces as well as directions for the analysis of social structures. The first chapter is dedicated to the games people play. Games are rehearsals of social interactions; they simulate reality and are open to experimentation; their rules establish limits within which freedom of action is possible. The second chapter investigates rooms people inhabit, i.e. the urban structures of social cohabitation. Here, external reference points of social conditioning can be found. The third chapter deals with the communities people create, as structures of individual, artistic positioning. With texts by Carlos Basualdo, Marjolein Schaap and Axel Lapp.

Résumé:
Accounts of decolonization routinely neglect Indigenous societies, yet Native communities have made unique contributions to anticolonial thought and activism. ''Remapping sovereignty'' examines how twentieth-century Indigenous activists in North America debated questions of decolonization and self-determination, developing distinctive conceptual approaches that both resonate with and reformulate key strands in other civil rights and global decolonization movements. In contrast to decolonization projects that envisioned liberation through state sovereignty, Indigenous theorists emphasized the self-determination of peoples against sovereign state supremacy and articulated a visionary politics of decolonization as earthmaking. Temin traces the interplay between anticolonial thought and practice across key thinkers, interweaving history and textual analysis. He shows how these insights broaden the political and intellectual horizons open to us today.
