Résumé:
The Purist movement in art, founded by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Amedée Ozenfant, championed a traditional classicism while it simultaneously embraced new technologies and materials. The only book on Purism, "L'Esprit Nouveau" is a key contribution to the study of classic 20th-century modernism in painting and architecture. The book serves as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The title examines over 75 paintings by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Léger. At the heart of the study lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking design of the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, at which the term "Art Deco" was coined. The architecture of Le Corbusier's pavilion, along with its interior decoration - paintings, sculpture, furniture, glassware, rugs, and other objects - offers a complete summation of Purist aesthetics. Included here too is the full translated text of Le Corbusier's and Ozenfant's 1918 manifesto, "Après le cubisme".

Résumé:
The French Riviera has been a fabled resort for more than a century. As an enclave for the rich and famous, as well as a scenic tourist spot, it represents all that is beautiful and amusing. But for many of the twentieth century's finest painters, sculptors, photographers, and architects it has been much more: a place of potent myth and extraordinary creativity. Picasso, Matisse, Beckmann, Brancusi, Lartigue, Le Corbusier, and Eileen Gray, among many others, were inspired to create some of their greatest work on the Côte d'Azur. This study examines the impact of modernity and the artistic imagination on an idyllic landscape. Touching on the issues of pleasure and escape, work and leisure, and desire and ecstasy, "Making Paradise" offers a fresh look at the Côte d'Azur and its historical significance as a site for modernist innovation from 1890 to the present. Beginning with the neoimpressionists, moving to the Fauves, and ending with such contemporary artists as David Hockney and Faith Ringgold, the book examines the splendid light and terrain of the southeastern coast of France and the region's influence on the artists who worked and played there. Like the book, the exhibition it accompanies features unexpected juxtapostitions: masterworks by Bonnard and Picasso with the photographs of Lartigue and Model; the villas of Le Corbusier, Gray, and Mallet-Stevens with designs for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo; and ceramics of Picasso with the found-object constructions of the École de Nice of the early 1960s.

Résumé:
As a tendency toward formalism returns to architecture, a number of practitioners are investigating the outer limits of tectonic expression. Vanguard architects are extending the boundaries of conventional construction to respond specifically to programmatic and site requirements. Capturing this dynamic work, "Radical Tectonics" presents four practices whose buildings push poetic construction to new extremes. All in their own way and according to local sensibility and conditions, Gülnter Behnisch (Stuttgart), Enric Miralles (Barcelona), Patkau Architects (Vancouver), and Mecanoo (Delft) focus on the art of construction and innovative craftsmanship. From Behnisch's contextual awareness of particular social and political environments to Miralles's building as land form, from Patkau's funky vernacular to Mecanoo's playful manipulation of program and landscape, these studies confront architecture's very nature with vigor and provocation.

Résumé:
This book stands in opposition to the popular notion that the best architecture is built on compromise. Rather, Neil Spiller argues, the most original and brave products of the architectural mind are often to be found in those projects which, for whatever reason, never came to fruition. "Lost Architectures" presents an array of such projects from the last decades of the twentieth century, consituting the unrealised dreams of some of the most inspirational architects working in the period. Most of the projects featured here have seldom, if ever, been published before, and some represent the last hand-drawn work of their creators before the age of the computer finally came into full force. Whilst they do not follow any specific style, these projects embody a spirit defined by Spiller as New Romanticism - a spirit which combines elements of aesthetic decadence and a certain camp mannerism with a love of angularity and mechanised ritual. Some of the architects in question are still in practice, with a great deal of high-profile built work behind them; others have never been recognised as they perhaps should have been. In both cases, this book is an invaluable resource of information and inspiration for students of architecture, as well as for theorists, historians and lay readers. It provides essential exposure for a range of work of great vitality which might otherwise risk being lost in the course of time.

Résumé:
This Architectural Design title poses a unique challenge to architects. It incites designers to respond to the limitless potential that outer space presents at the beginning of the third millennium. No longer man's final frontier restricted to the activities of government space agencies, the extraterrestial environment is soon to be opened up by private enterprises and individuals. Featured work, by those such as WAT, Shimizu Systems and the X-Prize contenders, prove that entrepreneurial companies are already producing independent pioneering designs for the first tourists. Contributing specialists from a wide range of disciplines endorse these developments: the engineer David Ashford describes the viability of developing commercial passenger planes for space tourism within decades and the economist Patrick Collins analyses the commercial rewards to be reaped from outer space. The social, legal and scientific effects of creating what could ultimately be an unlimited ecological zone beyond Earth are explored further. Just how far reaching the effects will be for the practice of architecture is suggested both by John Zukowsky's comprehensive overview of space architecture and Ted Krueger, who organised an architectural workshop with NASA. This is not, however, to overlook space's artistic impact on architectural design in the latter 20th century. Space Architecture also recognises the seductive power that high-technology space imagery has had for contemporary architects and their debt to film and TV, as well as cult figures such as David Bowie.
