Résumé:
Huong Ngô (born 1979) is a Hong Kong–born artist based in Santa Barbara. Her conceptual, research-based practice often takes the form of installation, printmaking and nontraditional mediums. Ungrafting looks at histories of colonial violence, specifically French colonialism in Vietnam, as well as resistance movements, through image-making, translations and material investigations. Ngô turns to a series of early 20th-century photographs showing foreign trees and tree grafts planted in Vietnam by the French. For the artist, grafting—a procedure that involves cutting and splicing different species into a single plant—serves as a powerful metaphor for the physical violence inherent in colonialism. An essay by Justin Quang Nguyên Phan, and conversations between Ngô and Aline Lo and Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi and Chadwick Allen, reflect on the connection between Ngô’s exhibition and global anticolonialism, the trans-Indigenous and the role of the archive in artistic production.

Résumé:
Featuring unparalleled depth of detail and insightful commentary, this latest addition to the comprehensive survey on Norman Foster, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, focuses on works from the 1980s to the early 1990s. "Norman Foster : works 2" explores several of the architect's most recognizable buildings, including the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters in Hong Kong, which virtually reinvented the office tower; the Sackler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, a project that epitomizes the effective intervention of contemporary design within historical buildings; and the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, which unified architecture and urbanism to create a vibrant new cultural core at the heart of the city. Bringing together contributions from noted commentators alongside essays and observations by Norman Foster and his colleagues, this overview reveals the key characteristics of Foster's design philosophy, showing how a commitment to social and environmental concerns.

Résumé:
Aluminium is an extremely versatile material, its light weight and its resistance to corrosion make it a particularly suitable material for some specific building requirements. Even in the post-war years, aluminium was already playing an innovative role as can be seen in the work of the French engineer, Jean Prouvé. For today's sophisticated architecture, aluminium is highly rated with its clear aesthetical qualities and great strength. This book provides a systematic overview of the applications of aluminium as a building material, giving information on the properties of the metal and highlighting the latest technical advances. A selection of 25 international projects document the application of aluminium in load-bearing structures, facades, roofs and windows. Amongst the projects included are Toyo Ito's Aluminium House in Tokyo, Renzo Piano's Mercedes Benz Design Centre in Stuttgart, SOM's Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, and Norman Foster’s Greenwich Transport Interchange.

Résumé:
In this publication Rachel Monroe challenges American preconceptions of the wild, wide-open West by addressing issues of surveillance; the series’ first fictional piece, by China Miéville, covers an under-examined area of public space under the guise of detective fiction; a study of public art by Ben Davis sheds light on the myths and stigmas that have accrued to public art, also asking what it can become; Christopher DeWolf shares a sensory navigation trip through a directionless Hong Kong; Michelle Nijhuis writes on the shifting ecologies of national parks; Sarah Fecht explores architecture and social life beyond Earth; while Jaron Lanier meditates on the idea of public space online, linking the prevailing, free-for-all model of the internet with a characteristically American yearning for freedom and repudiation of rules and structure. Also included are examples of public art works by Lawrence Weiner.

Résumé:
Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. ''The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography'' is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms.

Résumé:
A "new alliance" is being forged between designers and commercial property developers, who are championing progressive design, in projects as diverse as apartment blocks, houses, hotels and offices. While some architects are taking a proactive role in development, others are cutting out a new position for themselves as designer-developers. This is all happening at a time that property developers are starting to recognise the added value that an architect can bring to a scheme. By taking a truly international look at the projects architects and developers are achieving together, this publication explores the economic and demographic opportunities that are now driving architect-developer alliance in cities as diverse as Amsterdam, Hong Kong, London, Malmo, Melbourne, Montréal, New York, Phoenix and Tokyo. As architects and property developers break boundaries together, they are also beginning to transcend an established pattern of notorious and longstanding ill will. Could this herald a new age of economic saviness in architecture and an appreciation of design input in development?

Résumé:
Urbanisation and urban development are the focus of this comprehensive account which introduces readers to the far-reaching changes now taking place in Chinese cities. New and established scholars from the fields of geography, sociology and urban planning, including Chinese social scientists, contribute chapters on the development of Chinese cities up to the turn of the twenty-first century. All their work reflects the most recent scholarship. The book's original approach links the visible changes in urban life to changes in the larger political economy of China. Conversely, broad concepts that are central to understanding the country's re-emergence on the world stage, such as the transition from socialism, market reform, and globalization, are made tangible in their effects on people's daily lives in Chinese cities and in detailed examination of how these cities have developed. Case materials are drawn from all China's major cities, but particular attention is paid to Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The projects are accompanied by four essays, written by China experts. The regional planner Ton Kreukels describes the history of urban development in China. The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.

Résumé:
Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.
