Résumé:
A lexicon of selected architectural terms, supplemented by examples drawn from the author’s memories, this compendious compendium offers new and exciting ways to engage with architecture, enriching the reader’s experience of the built environment. Entries include traditional and modern architectural terminology, rendered with an intriguing, rhythmic play of alliteration and a display of philological origins, often enriched with sub-entries of first-person narratives, based on an auto-ethnographic practice with a post-secular framework. While organized in a standard alphabetical order, the contents reflect the author’s life experience, his early years in Mexico, his travels and sojourns in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Australia, and his life in Canada as an academic teaching the history of Western architectural theory and philosophy: a life with its inherent limitations and subjectivities, yielding definitions that are both particular and universal.

Résumé:
In this age of ever-increasing environmental awareness, the issue of sustainability is set to become the dominant factor in architectural design. At a time when, like most professions, architectural practice is increasingly governed by legal guidelines and requirements, competing policy demands require architects to aim for economic, social and environmental sustainability whilst also trying to effect social progress. "Sustaining Architecture in the Anti-Machine Age" asks whether these two ambitions can be reconciled. Featuring contributions from architects, journalists, academics and legal consultants, the book takes a balanced look at the subject, giving the full range of sometimes opposing views. Examining all the key issues, it considers why the industrial development of town and country is considered unsustainable rather than socially imperative, and whether the aim of raising the level, standard and performance of arhcitectural production conflicts with the promotion of sustainability.

Résumé:
Balancing environmental, social, economic, and aesthetic concerns, sustainable design has the potential to transform everyday life and is already reshaping the fields of architecture and product design. "Beyond green : toward a sustainable art" explores the influence of this design philosophy on an emerging generation of international artists who combine a fresh aesthetic sensibility with a constructively critical approach to the production, dissemination, and display of art. This catalogue's exhibition includes existing works, commissions, and previously presented work that has been “recycled,” spotlighting ways in which artists are building paths to new forms of practice. The exhibition is curated by Stephanie Smith, curator at the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, and is co-organized by iCI and the Smart Museum. It is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with artist interviews, and essays by Smith and by design historian Victor Margolin.

Résumé:
FOBA, an architectural practice based in Kyoto, looks beyond the aesthetics of minimalism, in order to find inspiration in the relationships between structure and site. "FOBA / Buildings", the first monograph on the decade-old firm, features ten projects. The work is at times boldly expressionistic, and at others refreshingly austere. The book also chronicles the FOB Homes system - a FOBA subsidiary company established in 1999 - a uniquely creative response to the generic mass-produced pre-fabricated housing available in Japan. With five basic prototypes that can be easily adapted to any site or client, FOB Homes redefines the concept of standardized housing. Their simple, neutral white boxes counter the visual chaos of contemporary Japan and offer the elegance and experience of architecture to the general public - a union of modernist aesthetics with the modernist ideology of democratic, affordable design.

Résumé:
Steven Holl is revered among architects and students for his quiet and consistent modernist buildings. His reputation among generations of students was cemented during his early tenure at Columbia University and his founding of Storefront for Art and Architecture. His Pamphlet Architecture series furthered his standing as a leader of the avant-garde. With his embrace of computer technology, Holl smoothly transitioned from the 1980s into the digital design era of the 1990s. At the same time, his practice expanded globally and his housing projects in Japan opened to international acclaim. Recently, the ultramodern design of his Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art earned high praise for its revitalizing influence on Helsinki's city center. Remarkably, this monograph is the only book available that documents Holl's full career, covering his early houses of the 1970's to his latest designs for museums currently under construction.

Résumé:
"Nature Over Again" reveals the story behind the majority of Finlay's renowned garden installations, and is the first study to examine his garden designs and 'interventions' in a consequential way. An accomplished Scottish poet, writer, artist and gardener, Finlay infused his garden designs with a distinct aesthetic philosophy and poetic sensibility.John Dixon Hunt situates his analysis of Finlay's gardens in the context of that broader philosophy and poetic work, drawing on Finlay's books, prints and other written reflections about the art and practice of garden design. From the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart to the Serpentine Gallery in London to the University of California at San Diego campus, the book documents how Finlay built an oeuvre of international renown, and ultimately argues that Finlay's innovations are best understood in the context of the long tradition of European gardens.

Résumé:
In 1995, Mike Kelley realized "Educational Complex", a model of the school he attended and the house where he grew up. The blind spots of the model represent forgotten zones, and are interpreted as symbolic places of "institutional" abuse. For Kelley, this work marks the beginning of a series of projects where autobiography, memory, and the reinterpretation of previous pieces become the privileged instruments in a poetic deconstruction of the structures and systems initiated at the end of the 1970s. "Educational Complex Onwards 1995–2008", is the first book bringing together these different works and offering an overview of the development of Kelley's practice. Each project is extensively documented by artist’s texts and reference material, while essays by Diedrich Diederichsen, Howard Singerman, and Anne Pontégnie explain the systemic change that the artist impulsed in his work to shift its direction and understanding.

Résumé:
Bernard Tschumi is a border crosser in the field of contemporary architecture. Equally present in Europe and the United States, he laid the cornerstone for his influential body of work two decades ago with a project that combines architecture and landscape architecture, theory and practice: the Parc de la Villette in Paris. Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture in New York for many years and the author of numerous books on architectural theory, Tschumi possesses a body of work that is presented here in overview for the first time. His current projects include a high-rise apartment building in New York, the Zénith Concert Hall in Limoges, and the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. Gilles de Bure, the author of numerous architectural publications on Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, Christian de Portzamparc, and others, presents an in-depth analysis of Tschumi’s work.

Résumé:
In this book, Anthony Vidler examines the work of four historians of architectural modernism and the ways in which their histories were constructed as more or less overt programs for the theory and practice of design in a contemporary context. Vidler looks at the historical approaches of Emil Kaufmann, Colin Rowe, Reyner Banham, and Manfredo Tafuri, and the specific versions of modernism advanced by their historical narratives. Vidler shows that the modernism conceived by Kaufmann was, like the late Enlightenment projects he revered, one of pure, geometrical forms and elemental composition; that of Rowe saw mannerist ambiguity and complexity in contemporary design; Banham's modernism took its cue from the aspirations of the futurists; and the "Renaissance modernism" of Tafuri found its source in the division between the technical experimentation of Brunelleschi and the cultural nostalgia of Alberti.
