Résumé:
Martin, an acclaimed architect, emerges from a coma after a roadside accident to find his world transformed: not only has the commission of a lifetime been taken from him, but his injury has left him with neglect syndrome, a loss of spatial awareness that has rendered him unfit to practice and unable to recognize the extent of his illness. Despite support from his formerly estranged brother and two grown daughters, his paranoia builds, alienating those closest to him. His only solace is found in the parallels he draws between himself and gifted Soviet-era architect Konstantin Melnikov, who survived Stalin’s disfavor by retreating into obscurity. As Martin retraces Melnikov’s life and his own fateful decisions, he becomes increasingly unsettled, until the discovery of the harrowing truth about the night of his accident hurtles him toward a deadly confrontation.

Résumé:
Philipp Schaerer's works are the outcome of a skillful amalgamation of photographic knowledge, compositional skills, digital craftsmanship, and the specificities of architectural practice. His imaged architectures do not correspond with actual buildings but instead both challenge the role of the photograph as documentary evidence and, equally, critique how architecture is consumed today. When first released in 2010 in German and French, this book was the only comprehensive presentation of Philipp Schaerer's work available. And while the perpetual development of information technology and digital photography is continuously rebalancing the relationship between architecture and its visual representation, the architect's synthetic images continue to occupy a relevant position within this debate. The Bildbauten series, assembled here in its original twenty-four plates and extended by eight additional new works, speaks a powerful visual language that transcends the barriers of any written text.

Résumé:
'Rzlbd HopScotch', the first monograph on rzlbd’s work, focuses on its built projects over the last five years, while including a selection of past works and polemical writings that set the foundation for the practice. With a particular interest in the house as an archetypal model of the world, whilst implementing the guiding idea that design belongs to everyone and that “modern has to be affordable”, the work of rzlbd occupies a unique position in its exploration of new ideas for contemporary infill dwellings. Along with architectural projects and writings, the book is also a record of Aliabadi’s search for a design language and his unique perspective coming out of his three major solo expeditions?to the North Pole, round the world in 49 days and the ‘Trans-Canada’, across the country from Atlantic to Pacific.

Résumé:
In contrast to tabula rasa urbanism, this book considers strategies for tabula plena?urban sites that are full of existing buildings of multiple time periods. Such dense sites prompt designers to work between the fields of architecture, historic preservation, and urban planning, developing methods for collaborative authorship and interlocking architectural forms. The book grew from a collaboration between the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation on the planning of the government quarter in Oslo. Emerging from this process, the book asks larger questions about how we practice, teach, and theorize engagement with existing architecture on an urban scale. It contains a compilation of short essays addressing theoretical questions, a sampling of design projects offering different formal strategies for architectural design, and a series of discussions about pedagogical strategies.

Résumé:
After two successive thematic issues, "Log 38" (Fall 2016) returns to its classic open form, bringing together myriad perspectives from architecture’s center and periphery. Cynthia Davidson’s expansive interview with New York architect Harry Cobb, of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, illuminates Cobb’s 60-plus years in practice, as well as the history of modernism in America. Eve Blau explores the contexts that drove the 1968 Learning from Las Vegas studio at Yale, and Pier Vittorio Aureli and Maria Shéhérazade Giudici reevaluate the roots of modern domestic space. "Log 38" also features critical perspectives on the current moment in architecture, with reviews of OMA’s Fondaco dei Tedeschi, reflections on this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, and reactions to Brexit from architects and educators affected by the vote, and even an imaginative look at the work of Sam Jacob Studio from 20 years in the future.

"Art and its institutions" is a reader on current institutional conditions and the role of institutions within artistic processes. With essays by authors and academics such as Beatrice von Bismarck, Andrea Fraser, Simon Sheikh and Jan Verwoert, this book examines the interests of the various institutions involved in the creation of art, and explore the impact these institutions have on the contemporary art world. It covers topics including the impact of the decline of the welfare state on art institutions; the social and physical architecture of art institutions in Nordic states and Eastern Europe; a critical re-evaluation of the institutional critique of the 70s and 90s and the introduction of new models of critique in current artistic practice. The book also documents and discusses two exhibition projects, and examine their relationship to the conflicts and desires provoked by institutions.

Résumé:
"The ecological engineer" is a new book series that celebrates the most innovative engineers in North America and the practices and principles that they use to produce structures, systems and technologies, in a way that embraces the emerging philosophy of sustainable design. Organized into three critical sections – practice, principles and projects – the book provides a valuable resource and touchstone for engineers, architects and other building professionals who hope to embrace an ethic that is responsible to both people and the environment. "Volume one: keen engineering" focuses on the work of one of the sustainable MEP firms in North America – KEEN Engineering. As mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers who work on projects all over the continent, they have consistently been inspiring on multiple levels – as a company, as individuals and just by the sheer volume and quality of their work.

Résumé:
John M. Lyle (18721945) was an anomaly among architects: a Beaux-Arts classicist who nevertheless found much inspiration in modernism, allowing his own traditionalist practice to be affected in form and detail by a brave new emphasis on minimalism and indigenous influence. With ornamentation showcasing local flora and fauna and a turn to native landscape for inspiration, his innumerable buildings contributed to a burgeoning nationalism in the field. A Progressive Traditionalist traces this aesthetic trajectory, documenting Lyles training at Yale and in Paris, his early career in New York and his later success in Toronto, including countless legendary banks and residences and the iconic Union Station. Part biography and part architectural history, and extensively illustrated with colour photographs and drawings throughout, this book is the first to examine in depth the important contributions of one of the early twentieth centurys foremost architects.

Résumé:
The product of an international collective of artists, architects and writers who create collaborative projects and publications, this third edition of Surface Tension's Supplement series documents three years of artistic research, site-specific work and location-based practices in Curitiba, Brazil--providing an in-depth exploration of the city's economically marginal favela dwellers, who venture throughout the public spaces of Curitiba in search of recyclable materials. Documentation and texts elaborate on the cultural and political issues that come to light through various uses of public space. Originally developed as a collaborative installation between international and local artists--including Ken Ehrlich, Brandon LaBelle, Octávio Camargo and Guilherme Soares--exhibited at Curitiba's Ybakatu Gallery, this publication raises pertinent questions about the consequences of cross-cultural and site-specific collaboration and proffers an experimental approach toward political inquiry and intermedia practice.
