Résumé:
Art museums have emerged in recent decades as the most vibrant and popular of all cultural institutions. Though art museums have never been more popular, their direction and values are now being contested as never before, both in the media and in the art world itself. This engaging thematic history of the art museum from its inception in the eighteenth century to the present offers an essential framework for understanding contemporary debates as they have evolved in Europe and the United States. From the visionary museums of Boullée in the eighteenth century to the new Guggenheim in Bilbao and beyond, it explores key aspects of museum theory and practice: ideals and mission; architecture; collecting, classification, and display; the public; commercialism; and restitution and repatriation. The only single volume to give a comprehensive account of the issues critical to museums, the book also highlights the challenges they will face in the future.

Résumé:
A prominent practitioner, an influential theorist, and an esteemed educator, the architect Peter Eisenman today stands at the center of architectural discourse and debate. This book, a companion volume to "Eisenman inside out : selected writings, 1963–1988", gathers a selection of his later writings. In these texts Eisenman undertakes theoretical analyses, close readings of his own works, and innovative assessments of the designs and writings of other architects and critics. In an introduction to the volume, Jeffrey Kipnis looks closely at Eisenman’s approach toward language and writing, a practice in which architecture itself becomes a form of written theory, as well as at his context within a critical canon that includes Jacques Derrida and Rosalind Krauss. Presenting the range of Eisenman’s important contributions to architectural theory, this collection of nineteen essays provides insight into the architect’s own understandings and methodologies and offers provocative challenges for his readers.

globalized society, and it will continue to do so in the future. Already today, the demands of the job no longer correspond to the profile on which classical architectural training is based. In this context, the question that arises is no longer that of the building alone, but also that of a changed approach to building and new pathways within design itself. This is where Explorations comes in: internationally celebrated authors, all of whom are professors as well and hence directly involved in the processes they describe, address the principal topics of contemporary architectural research. Taking the works of their own design studios as examples they offer concrete discussions of those topics and place them in the context of applied research and practice. Short and accessible essays on the most important architectural movements of the twentieth century clarify the relationship between the subjects discussed and canonical architectural research.

Résumé:
Investigating the current groundswell of experiments and creative work that utilises design as a method to explore and manipulate actual biological material, Neoplasmatic Design presents the impact of emerging and progressive biological advances upon architectural and design practice. The rapid development of innovative design approaches in the realms of biology, microbiology, biotechnology, medicine and surgery has immense significance for architecture, being as important for their cultural and aesthetic impact as for their technical implications. Featured architects include Peter Cook, Tobias Klein, Kol/Mac, Make, R(n), Neil Spiller and VenhoevenCS. Longer contributions from medical practitioners, architects and artists: Rachel Armstrong, Marcos Cruz, Anthony Dunne, Nicola Haines, Steve Pike, Yukihiko Sugawara, and Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr/SymbioticA. Features international research projects undertaken at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, the Royal College of Art in London, the University of Western Australia and the Nagaoka Institute of Design in Japan.

Documenting the production of the New York Graphic Workshop (NYGW), a group founded in 1965 by three young Latin American artists in New York - Luis Camnitzer, José Guillermo Castillo and Liliana Porter - this is the first comprehensive overview of this crucial, yet not so well-known, episode in the history of U.S. and Latin American Conceptual art. The mission of the NYGW was to redefine the practice of printmaking in Conceptual terms, focusing on the mechanical and repetitive nature of the medium rather than its traditional techniques. The NYGW functioned as a collective. It held unconventional exhibitions, including several by mail and one in a safe-deposit box on 57th Street, and it participated in The Museum of Modern Art's 1970 exhibition Information. The NYGW also produced prints by some of the leading contemporary artists of the period, including Michael Snow, Max Neuhaus, José Luis Cuevas and Salvador Dali.

Résumé:
"Vitruvius on Architecture" presents not only a new translation of the five books most relevant to contemporary architecture but also new drawings and watercolors that illustrate, certainly for the first time since ancient days, Vitruvius’s methods of proportion and composition. Architect and educator Thomas Gordon Smith re-created these finely detailed illustrations directly from the text, both the clearly written descriptions and examples of temple architecture are cited. Photographs of these buildings and details of their architecture are also included in this volume. The author, in an introduction both scholarly and personal, discusses what is known of Vitruvius himself as well as his influence generations of architects. This new edition of an ancient tome is intended for practical application, as an indispensable reference for classical studies, and as an incontrovertible example of the enduring value of the architecture of antiquity for contemporary education and practice.

Résumé:
Written between 1974 and 2012, ''Revolution at point zero'' collects forty years of research and theorizing on the nature of housework, social reproduction, and women’s struggles on this terrainto escape it, to better its conditions, to reconstruct it in ways that provide an alternative to capitalist relations. Indeed, as Federici reveals, behind the capitalist organization of work and the contradictions inherent in ''alienated labor'' is an explosive ground zero for revolutionary practice upon which are decided the daily realities of our collective reproduction. Beginning with Federici’s organizational work in the Wages for Housework movement, the essays collected here unravel the power and politics of wide but related issues including the international restructuring of reproductive work and its effects on the sexual division of labor, the globalization of care work and sex work, the crisis of elder care, the development of affective labor, and the politics of the commons.

Résumé:
South Asia holds a unique place among the many regions of the world where modern architecture was understood as both a tool for social progress and a global lingua franca in the second half of the 20th century. Following the end of British rule in 1947-48, architects in the newly formed nations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh (East Pakistan until 1971) and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) proposed a novel understanding of modernity, disrupting the colonial hierarchy of center and periphery by challenging modernism's universalist claims. Architecture offered multiple ways to break with the colonial past. Through the establishment of institutions that embodied the societal aspirations of the period, and the creation of new cities and spaces for political representation, South Asian architects produced a distinct body of work in dialogue with global developments while advancing the theory and practice of low-cost, climatically and socially responsive design.

Résumé:
This publication describes a technique applied by experienced stone carvers, when they work on sculptural objects: before they start cutting into a stone they contemplate its surface to anticipate the structure and natural growth beneath it. This ritual of looking into opaque matter describes a spiritual practice. At the same time it functions as a metaphor for a special kind of tunnel vision, focused on what lies invisible under a surface. This book is a time travel through past and present, above and below ground. Landscapes, impacted and even created by resource extraction are put into context with contemporary industrial mining equipment and historical cast iron utilitarian goods. Through the combination of images from very different archives, connections are made that speak about the complex relationships of humans and minerals. Images and texts contribute to a debate on mineral and human coevolution, that redefines the separation between life and non-life.

Résumé:
In this work Tim Ingold offers a persuasive new approach to understanding how human beings perceive their surroundings. He argues that what we are used to calling cultural variation consists, in the first place, of variations in skill. Neither innate nor acquired, skills are grown, incorporated into the human organism through practice and training in an environment. They are thus as much biological as cultural. To account for the generation of skills we have therefore to understand the dynamics of development. And this in turn calls for an ecological approach that situates practitioners in the context of an active engagement with the constituents of their surroundings. The book is set to revolutionise the way we think about what is ‘biological’ and ‘cultural’ in humans, about evolution and history, and indeed about what it means for human beings – at once organisms and persons – to inhabit an environment.
