Résumé:
"City of Segregation" documents one hundred years of struggle against the enforced separation of racial groups through property markets, constructions of community, and the growth of neoliberalism. This movement history covers the decades of work to end legal support for segregation in 1948; the 1960s Civil Rights movement and CORE’s efforts to integrate LA’s white suburbs; and the 2006 victory preserving 10,000 downtown residential hotel units from gentrification enfolded within ongoing resistance to the criminalization and displacement of the homeless. Andrea Gibbons reveals the shape and nature of th e racist ideology that must be fought, in Los Angeles and across the United States, if we hope to found just cities.

In 1929, the great Swiss historian and architecture critic Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968)—later the author of the classics "Space, Time and Architecture" (1941) and "Mechanization Takes Command" (1948)—issued Befreites Wohnen (Liberated Dwelling), a small but vocal architecture manifesto and an early expression of modernist housing ideology. From the vision of an international architectural modernism (a mission with which Giedion was involved as the first secretary-general of the International Congresses of Modern Architecture, between 1928 and 1959) to debates on the industrialization of construction processes and their impact on public housing, Liberated Dwelling expresses the dreams and anxieties of early 20th-century modernist architecture.

Résumé:
In this definitive monograph, architect Ralf Bock seeks to reveal the sensuality of Adolf Loos’ interior designs, focusing on his sincere belief in the evolution of tradition. The book explores 30 existing projects from Loos’ oeuvre, documented in 160 full-color images by the celebrated French photographer Phillippe Ruault. Along with materials from the Loos archive at the Albertina Museum Vienna, these photographs and Bock’s commentary provide a new interpretation of Loos’ work and encourage the reintroduction of his ideology into the contemporary architectural conversation. Profiles of Loos’ original clients and interviews with people who currently inhabit his designs round out this unique publication.

Résumé:
This publication concentrates on the Functionalist stylistic register and ideology. Espen Gleditsch takes his point of departure in the architecture exhibition Weissenhofziedlung in Stuttgart, which opened in 1927 with the Functionalist icon Mies van der Rohe as artistic director. The criteria for the apartment blocks in the competition required all facades to be white and all roofs to be flat. But most of these houses were in fact painted in bright colours, although the black-and-white photographs in the catalogue maintained the impression of whiteness. The whiteness of the modern architecture was disseminated through the press, an impression that is still being reproduced.

Résumé:
Author Owen Hatherley shows how our past is being resold in order to defend the indefensible. From the marketing of a “make do and mend” aesthetic to the growing nostalgia for a utopian past that never existed, a cultural distraction scam prevents people grasping the truth of their condition. The Ministry of Nostalgia looks at the creation of a false history - examining the austerity of the 1940s and 1950s, which saw the development of a welfare state while the nation crawled recovered from the war. Hatherley examines how this period has been recast to offer consolation for the violence of neoliberalism, an ideology dedicated to the privatisation of common wealth.
