In Building a new New World, Jean-Louis Cohen traces the concept of “Amerikanizm” and its impact on Russia’s built environment from early czarist interest in Revolutionary America, through the spectacular World’s Fairs of the nineteenth century, to department stores, skyscrapers, and factories built in Russia using American methods during the twentieth century. Visions of America also captivated the Russian avant-garde, from El Lissitzky to Moisei Ginzburg, and Cohen explores the ongoing artistic dialogue maintained between the two countries at the mid-century and in the late Soviet era, when the Cold War induced a strategic competition. Tracing the many journeys of Russian writers, politicians, and planners through the American territory, foregrounding the constant streams of cultural and technological transfer from the U.S.A. to Russia, and revealing the parallel fascination among Russian and American intellectuals with the ongoing pursuit of land occupation and development within their respective borders, this study of Amerikanizm in the architecture and urban design of Russia makes a timely contribution to our understanding of modern architecture and its broader geopolitics.

Travaillant à la manière d’un architecte, il en a extrait la structure de ses sculptures. Sa pièce principale, The Numbers, est une méticuleuse représentation de plus d’un mètre de haut de la tête idéale de Piero della Francesca. In a treatise on perspective written towards the end of his life, Piero della Francesca attempted to determine the mathematically "ideal" proportions of the human head, basing his drawings on a belief in the cosmological significance of certain numbers and their geometrical relationships. After many years of creative meditation on these drawings, Smedley decided to translate their mystery into physical form, working the way an architect works to extract from them the structure of his sculptures. His principal piece, The Numbers, is a meticulous, four-foot high realization of Piero’s ideal head.

This perspective is reinforced through visual contributions by Yto Barrada and Takashi Homma—two photographers especially invested in capturing everyday urban life. In a world marked by decolonization and Cold War politics, Casablanca and Chandigarh appear simultaneously as exponents of and countercurrents to modernization and its development perspectives. The book’s three chapters set the context for reading Casablanca and Chandigarh as the results of nuanced, dynamic processes of international exchange driven by the engagement and expertise of a new class of design professionals. The choices made by Charney from the ideas enclosed in the pre-packaged “news” images order them into a “dictionary,” and show the built and inhabited world as it appears through journalistic information. Here, the unexpected events transmitted by wire-service news photographs—selected, classified into various thematic areas, and collated by Charney—confront us with the shock or recognition that allows us to see architecture from outside its presentation as an isolated monument. The choices made by Charney from the ideas enclosed in the pre-packaged “news” images order them into a “dictionary,” and show the built and inhabited world as it appears through journalistic information. This publication accompanied the Canadian entry to the Venice Biennale’s 7th International Architecture Exhibition, whose theme was “The City: Less Aesthetics, More Ethics.”

Archaeology of the Digital delves into the genesis and establishment of digital tools for design conceptualization, visualization, and production at the end of the 1980s. How was the transition from analog practices to new digital tools managed, and the dialogue between them exploited? What was the cultural and technological landscape of that moment? These questions are at the foundation of this publication and its accompanying exhibition that unfold around four projects selected as seminal moments in the early development stages of digital architecture: Frank Gehry’s Lewis Residence (1989 –1995), Peter Eisenman’s Frankfurt Biozentrum (1987), Shoei Yoh’s design of the roof structure of Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and of Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium (1990 –1992) and Chuck Hoberman’s Expanding Sphere (1991) and Iris Dome (1994). Each project established a significant direction for architectural research by experimenting with the possibilities offered by novel digital tools. The dialogue between computer sciences, architecture and engineering is at the core of these experiments, which can be considered precursors of approaches still operative today.
