Résumé:
Robert Rauschenberg's engagement with photography began in the late 1940s under the tutelage of Hazel Larsen Archer at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. This exposure (or experience) was so great that for a time Rauschenberg was unsure whether to pursue painting or photography as a career. Instead, he chose both, and found ways to fold photography into his Combines, maintained a practice of photographing friends and family, documented the evolution of artworks and occasionally dramatized them by inserting himself into the picture frame. This volume gathers and surveys for the first time Rauschenberg's numerous uses of photography. This publication includes portraits of friends such as Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, studio shots, photographs used in the Combines and Silkscreen paintings, photographs of lost artworks and works in process. This allows us to re-imagine almost the entirety of the artist's output in light of his always inventive uses of photography, while also supplying previously unseen glimpses into his social milieu of the 1950s and early 60s.

Résumé:
In February 1956 the president of IBM hired the industrial designer and architect Eliot F. Noyes, charging him with reinventing IBM's corporate image, from stationery and curtains to products such as typewriters and computers and to laboratory and administration buildings. What followed remade IBM in a way that would also transform the relationships between design, computer science, and corporate culture. IBM's program assembled a cast of leading figures in American design: Noyes, Charles Eames, Paul Rand, George Nelson, and Edgar Kaufmann Jr. The Interface offers a detailed account of the key role these designers played in shaping both the computer and the multinational corporation. Harwood describes the influence of computer and corporation on the theory and practice of design. Here we see how, in the period stretching from the "invention" of the computer during World War II to the appearance of the personal computer in the mid-1970s, disciplines once well outside the realm of architectural design -information and management theory, cybernetics, ergonomics, computer science- became integral aspects of design.

Résumé:
This is the first full-scale study of Wodiczko's work, its ethico-political imperatives, and the diverse interpretive lenses which accompany its theorization. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, and bringing together an array of essays by leading scholars from a variety of disciplines, the book represents the most significant and sustained engagement with the artist's practice to date. By nature, Wodiczko's work is often controversial and the book looks at his development of a series of nomadic instruments for both homeless and immigrant operators that function as implements for survival, communication, empowerment, and healing. The Homeless Vehicle project in New York City, equips nomadic 'evicts' with tools for self-articulation, whilst the elaborate Xenology instruments are designed to empower the 'immigrant' by providing access to speech and figuration in the public realm. Like much of his work, his interrogative designs and portable instruments are animated by a desire to bring the socially opaque into the public sphere of appearances, to restore voice and visibility to those rendered mute within the parameters of the public domain.

Résumé:
Today, with the advent of digital media technologies and the ability to conceptualize, express and produce complex forms using digital means, the question of the status of the architectural form is once again under consideration. Indeed, the computer liberated architecture from the tyranny of the right angle and enabled the design and production of non-standard buildings, based on irregular geometry. Yet, the questions concerning the method of form expression in contemporary architecture, and its meaning, remain very much open. Performalism takes up this discussion, defines it and presents changes in form conception in architecture, followed by their repercussions. The book is supported by a wealth of case studies from some of the top firms across the globe and contributed to by some of the top names in this field. With a unique and insightful emphasis on professional practice this is essential reading for all architects, aspiring and practicing. The book is supported by a wealth of case studies from some of the top firms across the globe and contributed to by some of the top names in this field.

Romanticism was a cultural and intellectual movement characterized by discovery, revolution, and the poetic as well as by the philosophical relationship between people and nature. Botany sits at the intersection where romantic scientific and literary discourses meet. Clandestine Marriage explores the meaning and methods of how plants were represented and reproduced in scientific, literary, artistic, and material cultures of the period. Theresa M. Kelley synthesizes romantic debates about taxonomy and morphology, the contemporary interest in books and magazines devoted to plant study and images, and writings by such authors as Mary Wollstonecraft and Anna Letitia Barbauld. Period botanical paintings of flowers are reproduced in color, bringing her argument and the romantics' passion for plants to life. In addition to exploring botanic thought and practice in the context of British romanticism, Kelley also looks to the German philosophical traditions of Kant, Hegel, and Goethe and to Charles Darwin's reflections on orchids and plant pollination. Her interdisciplinary approach allows a deeper understanding of a time when exploration of the natural world was a culture-wide enchantment.

Résumé:
This volume explores the curious afterlives of the floppy disk in the 21st century through the work of those involved with the medium today. The book reflects on notions of obsolescence, media preservation and nostalgia, and challenges these by showing the endurance and versatility of this familiar piece of technology. From floppy filmmakers to floppy painters and beyond: what drives people to continue working with the medium that is typically deemed obsolete? What challenges and affordances does it provide? And what does the future hold in store for the familiar black square? By looking at the current presence of past technology we can assess our present-day situation and speculate on the future developments of our media landscape. After all, the technology of the past is also part of our future. This volume features interviews with key players in the contemporary floppy-disk world, including not only artists and filmmakers using floppy disks in their practice but also businessmen, archivists and museum proprietors working to preserve the medium.

Résumé:
This pack includes the four books of the main exhibitions of Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2022, curated by Diogo Burnay and Cristina Veríssimo. ''Cycles'': This book brings together contemporary architectural practices and artists reflecting upon the art of designing cycles, addressing the past and present of construction, relationships to the geopolitics of extractivism, and possible futures for the building industry. ''Multiplicity'': This book features the work of practices from across the globe experimenting in a myriad of ways with architecture. Often working in challenging environmental, social, and political conditions, these practitioners are pushing the boundaries of architectural practice. ''Retroactive'': Through eight essays focusing on pressing issues in the architectural and urban design fields, this book reflects on the challenges and opportunities in addressing broken cities, which fail to provide services and optimal liveable conditions to their inhabitants, and in which one third of humanity dwells. ''Visionaries'': The project ''Visionaries'' – an exhibition and a publication – explores both the process and agents of visionary design production in the age of the next grand narrative.

Résumé:
In this personal account of A.J. Diamond’s life and work, he shares how he came to be the founder of the leading architecture firm Diamond Schmitt, one of Canada’s most successful architecture companies. He also explains his principles of design, which at their core are about making a positive impact in the world, considering the needs of the content, client, and context. Diamond gives insight into his design principles in relation to some of his most notable projects, including the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, la Maison symphonique de Montréal, the Mariinsky II Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Diamond also chronicles his family ancestry, his childhood in South Africa, from his birth in his grandfather’s study in the small provincial town of Piet Retief on the borders of Eswatini (Swaziland) and Mozambique, to his university days at the University of Cape Town and Oxford and the University of Pennsylvania. His memoir traces his immigration to the U.S. and, eventually, Canada as well as his growing architectural practice in Toronto, where he focused on the issues facing his chosen city.

Résumé:
Economic strengthening and the developments associated with it, such as population growth, rural flight, and the explosive growth of cities, pose enormous challenges for city planners in urban centers throughout the world. But clumsy "test-tube" urban plans like those developed for China in part by German planners have shown that different standards and rules apply in the non-European world than in Europe s organically developed urban structures. This manual analyzes contemporary urban phenomena in economic growth regions using the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Abeba as an example, and presents a catalogue of sustainable strategies for city planning practice in the Second and Third Worlds. In the process, it provides planners with generally applicable methods and tools that are usable at the design stage and equip them to develop and deploy dynamic planning and project management processes. To this end, it illuminates such topical subjects as the changing agrarian and industrial landscape, the activation of urban wastelands, and the increasing density of urban hubs. In addition, it uses real projects as examples to highlight avenues for practical implementation.
