The cradle-to-cradle principle envisions buildings returning to the natural cycle after use. In practice, however, most are only partially composed of natural or compostable materials. One notable exception is Florian Nagler’s Garden House, winner of the Detail Award, which closely follows this principle. Another route is the reuse or refurbishment of components from demolished buildings. But this, too, is complex – components are often scarce and costly to extract and and make fit for new applications. To facilitate recycling, some structures are being designed for disassembly. Yet even timber joints fixed with screws can prove difficult to undo after years in place. A research group in Arles sees itself as a recycler of remnants, developing new materials from construction debris and agricultural waste: sunflower stalks become acoustic panels, while rice straw from cultivation is turned into insulation. The team also experiments with local resources: in nearby salt pans, salt crystallises on metal racks to form tiles, while algae are used to make lamps, vases, and wall finishes. Architecture made from rubble, clad in salt, rice, and seaweed – a compelling vision of the future. Perhaps the most promising path lies in combining these diverse strategies.

Its title – perhaps like the visits themselves – is misleading: rather than wisdom or guidance, Soth offers an angular and unresolved reflection on artmaking at different stages of life and the relations of photography, time, and ageing. The photographs here range from formal studies evocative of the classroom to more unruly works of self-expression. Ambiguous stagings, found forms, and lyrical portraits are interspersed with gnomic quotes and unfinished credos scrawled on Post-its. Among the students, Soth himself appears at intervals, an uncertain sage in their midst. Inspired by Walker Evans’s late Polaroids, this latest body of work reveals a new expansion of Soth’s practice and a new vantage, twenty years on from the publication of his first book. Recalling the conceit of Broken Manual, it uses an instructional format as a spurious cover for introspection and provocation. As much as a study of the experience of the young artist, this is a reckoning with the prospect of becoming an old one.

Since the earliest days of the pandemic, care work has been thrust into the national spotlight. The notion of care seems simple enough. Care is about nurturing, feeding, nursing, assisting, and loving human beings. It is “the work that makes all other work possible.” But as historian Premilla Nadasen argues, we have only begun to understand the massive role it plays in our lives and our economy. Nadasen traces the rise of the care economy, from its roots in slavery, where there was no clear division between production and social reproduction, to the present care crisis, experienced acutely by more and more Americans. Today’s care economy, Nadasen shows, is an institutionalized, hierarchical system in which some people’s pain translates into other people’s profit. Yet this is also a story of resistance. Low-wage workers, immigrants, and women of color in movements from Wages for Housework and Welfare Rights to the Movement for Black Lives have continued to fight for and practice collective care. These groups help us envision how, given the challenges before us, we can create a caring world as part of a radical future.

Between the early 1930s and 1950s, modernist architecture underwent a spectacular change of fortune in Britain – from a small-scale avant-garde movement, to the official, state-funded architectural idiom of the post-1945 Welfare State. FRS Yorke (1906–62) was an architect who completely followed that trajectory. His book "The modern house" (1934) placed his detailed knowledge of European architecture as an introduction to modern architecture for generations of architects, and provided inspiration for his own designs. But it was only after World War II, and the social and political change which came in its wake, that Yorke was able to turn his reputation as a modernist into commercial success. As his pre-War contemporaries gave up architecture or moved abroad, his practice – Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall – drew on his experience of working on large, state-funded construction projects during the War, and participated in the transformation of Britain’s social and physical fabric with its new housing, hospitals, schools, universities and airports. This book concludes with a memoir by David Allford, who worked with Yorke and Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall from 1952 until 1989.
