Résumé:
In the years after World War II, a distinctly American model for suburban development emerged. The expansive rings of outer suburbs that formed around major cities were decentralized and automobile oriented, an embodiment of America’s postwar mass-production, mass-consumption economy. But alternate models for suburbia, including “transit-oriented development,” “smart growth,” and “New Urbanism,” have inspired critiques of suburbanization and experiments in post-suburban ways of living. In Sequel to Suburbia, Nicholas Phelps considers the possible post-suburban future, offering historical and theoretical context as well as case studies of transforming communities.

The work weaves together cultural, social, and historical references with autobiographical documents, postcards, pinups of film and rock stars, documentary references to the first and second world wars, geometric diagrams for textile weaving, a sampling of New York doorways, illustrated covers from news magazines, the contents of an exhibition catalogue devoted to postwar European and American art, a kitschy literary calendar, and extracts from some of Darboven's earlier works.

Canada is situated geographically, historically, and culturally between old empires (Great Britain and France) and a more recent one (the United States), as well as on the terrain of First Nations communities. Poised between historical and metaphorical empires and operating within the conditions of incomplete modernity and economic and cultural dependency, Canada has generated a body of cultural criticism and theory that offers unique insights into the dynamics of both center and periphery. The Reader brings together for the first time in one volume recent writing in Canadian cultural studies and work by significant Canadian cultural analysts of the postwar era.

Résumé:
Founders of the Congress for the New Urbanism, Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk are at the forefront of this movement, and in Suburban Nation they assess sprawl's costs to society, be they ecological, economic, aesthetic, or social. It is a lively, thorough, critical lament, and an entertaining lesson on the distinctions between postwar suburbia-characterized by housing clusters, strip malls, office parks, and parking lots-and the traditional neighborhoods that were built as a matter of course until mid-century. It is an indictment of the entire development community, including governments, for the fact that America no longer builds towns.

Résumé:
Providing a philosophical and cultural context for discourse around the sublime in recent art, the book surveys the diverse and sometimes conflicting interpretations of the term as it has evolved from the writings of Longinus, Burke, and Kant to present-day writers and artists. The sublime underlies the nobility of Classicism, the awe of Romantic nature, and the terror of the Gothic. In the last half-century, the sublime has haunted postwar abstraction, returned from the repression of theoretical formalism, and has become a key term in critical discussions of human otherness and posthuman realms of nature and technology.

Résumé:
In this work, architectural historian Alice Friedman draws on a vast range of sources to argue that the aesthetics of mid-century modern architecture reflect an increasing fascination with “glamour,” a term widely used in those years to characterize objects, people, and experiences as luxurious, expressive, and even magical. Featuring assessments of architectural examples ranging from Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building to Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate, as well as vintage photographs, advertisements, and posters, this book argues that new audiences and client groups with tastes rooted in popular entertainment made their presence felt in the cultural marketplace during the postwar period.

Résumé:
Donald Judd (1928-1994) is one of the most influential American artists of the postwar era. Beginning in the 1960s, he developed new ideas about art--in both his works and writings--that challenged many of modernism's core tenets by resisting the categories of painting and sculpture. Judd described this work as "specific objects." Critics labeled it minimalism. Perhaps because Judd's own critical writings provide a discursive framework for his work, some of the monographic essays on his work are not widely known. This volume collects critical and scholarly writings on Judd, examining his work as both artist and critic.

Résumé:
"Designing San Francisco" is the untold story of the formative postwar decades when U.S. cities took their modern shape amid clashing visions of the future. In this pathbreaking and richly illustrated book, Alison Isenberg shifts the focus from architects and city planners—those most often hailed in histories of urban development and design—to the unsung artists, activists, and others who played pivotal roles in rebuilding San Francisco between the 1940s and the 1970s. An evocative portrait of one of the world’s great cities, "Designing San Francisco" provides a new paradigm for understanding past and present struggles to define the urban future.

Résumé:
Published on the occasion of the exhibition ''Tom Wesselmann: La Promesse du Bonheur'', held at the Villa Paloma, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, this catalogue is a critical overview of a key American pop artist and an important opportunity to analyze specific aspects of his work: Victorian and post-Victorian sexuality, female agency, postwar economic abundance, beauty, the erotics of anticipation, the politics of the gaze and strategies of indeterminacy. Every aspect of the book's design, including its more than 170 color illustrations, is conceived to reflect on the artist's haptic, indexical painterly approach and his oversize scale system.
