Résumé:
In the South of France, sited on a hill of olive trees, pinus pinea, and a vineyard, a family retreat was designed with a key mission of maintaining the vitality of the site. A small agricultural plot, the site offered the possibility of amplification. With the introduction of a garden and many outdoor living spaces, the family had the intention of cultivating the landscape as part of their stewardship. In part a response to a programmatic brief, but moreover, a discursive response to architectural predicaments of geometry, typology, and anomaly, the house is also a response to Preston Scott Cohen’s pedagogies on architecture.

Résumé:
Joachim Brohm rose to prominence in the early 1980s, one of the first photographers in Europe to take pictures exclusively in colour, connecting the everyday cultural landscape with the new possibilities of colour photography. This collection titled Typology 1979 is one of his very earliest series, depicting 35 allotment sheds from the Ruhr valley region of Germany, painterly images that are an everyday inventory – of garden structures, of human activity. Influenced by the great American photographers such as William Eggleston and Robert Adams, he also looked to his German contemporaries, Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose ‘typologies’ are heralded in the collection’s title.

Résumé:
Over the last half century, Bernard Lassus has developed his theory and practice of the conditions that enable our appropriation of urban spaces. Light, colour and movement are the main elements forming his art installations and urban spatial designs. In this previously unpublished analysis, art historian Stephen Bann scrutinises Lassuss professional and creative trajectory as it intersects with other leading artistic and intellectual figures, from kinetic art to garden design and landscapes. Appearances in the everyday environment are crucial in this reflection on the meaning of being an integral part of the shifts of contemporary society, in architecture, urbanism and beyond.

Résumé:
Mien Ruys, who worked mostly in the Netherlands for almost 60 years, was one of the most influential landscape architects of the 20th Century. A leading proponent of modernist design, she introduced clean lines, geometric shapes and innovative materials. One of the few women members of CIAM, she collaborated regularly with architects including Aldo van Eyck and Gerrit Rietveld, often on much needed social housing schemes. Uniquely, she combined this modernist approach with an extensive knowledge of plants and planting, which she learnt in her father’ s Royal Moerheim Nursery in Dedemsvaart. At the nursery, she met Gertrude Jekyll - who greatly influenced Mien as she developed her own loose, natural style of planting - and created 30 experimental gardens from which lessons which can still be learnt.

Résumé:
Renowned French architect Jean Nouvel designed the Serpentine Gallery's pavilion for 2010, and created a commanding, eye-catching all-red structure designed to mimic the moment "when the summer sun catches you full in the eyes and, as you blink, the world dissolves into red." Also inspired by London's red buses and telephone boxes, this dramatic and seductive pavilion consists of a cantilevered glass wall supporting a central frame, with retractable red canvas awnings, a red rubber floor and, to accommodate its many visitors, a red cafe bar, red table tennis tables and red hammocks, tables and chairs. "It's architecture on holiday," Nouvel has joked, also describing the pavilion as a "big sunglass." This similarly striking publication, designed by Nouvel, records the project in documentation, eight foldout posters and an interview with Nouvel by Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
