For their first show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in 2001 they papered over the windows with the announcement “Opening Soon Prada.” Pursuing and inverting this theme, in 2005 they installed a mocked-up Prada store on a deserted road near Marfa, Texas. They have recreated hospitals and prison cells, and have reconfigured gallery spaces to spatially deter their would-be audience. “Our aim is to investigate some of the power structures that these spaces derive from, and by exchanging and replacing some of these structures, show how fragile they actually are.” This monograph is the first extensive survey of their work to date.

Kazuo Shinohara’s (1925–2006) book Residential Architecture is considered one of the most significant pieces of writing on Japanese architecture of the late twentieth century. First published in Japan in 1964 as Jutaku kenchiku, the book was mandatory reading for generations of students of architecture in Japan and has deeply influenced many of the best-known Japanese designers, such as Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, and others. Translated by architectural historian David B. Stewart (1942–2025) and architects Shin-ichi Okuyama (born 1961) and Kenichi Nakamura (born 1958), Shinohara’s reflections on housing are available in English for the first time, making multifaceted insights into the fundamentals of his outstanding work accessible to a global audience. By isolating details and compressing visual space, the photographer turned the real world into vibrant, graphic pattern. “The pictures aim at illustrating nothing whatever beyond the fact that we are surrounded by many beautiful and exciting things,” Helmer-Petersen said. “And that there can be a great deal of pleasure in spotting them and capturing their beauty by means of color photography.”

This publication documents the life, oeuvre, and achievement of Charles Smeaton and his younger brother, John. Launched by the opening of their "photographic gallery" in 1861, they developed a reputation in Quebec for images of contemporaneous people, places, and events taken in challenging outdoor settings. Smeaton pictures of the aftermath of the Great Fire of Quebec in 1866 helped bring an understanding of the disaster to an international audience; images featuring the gold mining industry were displayed at the Exposition universelle in Paris the following year. When Charles travelled to Europe in 1866, he accomplished a feat previously thought impossible, taking the first successful photographs in the Roman catacombs. John moved to Montreal in 1869, where he worked for newspapers and developed techniques for the direct transfer of photographs into print without the necessity of intermediary engravings. This volume is the first comprehensive biographical study detailing the innovation and imagination of the Smeaton brothers and their legacy of images across two continents.
