Perhaps as ubiquitous as smartphones today, the books of hours were a private necessity in Europe during the Middle Ages. These manuscripts contained collections of texts that were meaningful to each owner, as well as an organized method of structuring the day around prayer by marking the passing of the canonical hours. Although highly personalized, with intricate miniatures and illuminations, all books of hours contained sections to be recited at regular intervals throughout the twenty-four hours of the day. In them, the public and the private timescales converged, crystallized into a material, perdurable form not devoid of beauty. "The book of hours" by Frida Escobedo is a modern exegesis of this extinct devotional practice: a project in which twenty-four objects were photographed at different intervals of time to capture their evolution, making a new calendar of matter and light. As humanity has transitioned to a secular understanding of time in which hours are organized and conceived in terms of productivity, The Book of Hours interrogates the place of contemplation in our era, its possibility and necessity. Through this book—a public display of a private collection of objects—readers are invited to contemplate these arrays of matter and experience the ways in which they once interacted with light, that burning needle in time’s template.

This timely volume, edited by Tom Snow and Afonso Ramos, addresses an extraordinary moment in debates over the institutional frameworks and networks of art including large-scale direct actions, as well as a radical rethinking of art venues and urban spaces according to racial, class, or gender-based disparities, including demonstrations against the extractive and exploitative practices of neoliberal accumulation and climate catastrophe. Organized by Betti-Sue Hertz, "Transmission" offers new perspectives on the impact of Matta's role in the development of late Surrealism and Matta-Clark's influence on the 1970s SoHo art scene. Both artists were originally trained as architects, and though they ostensibly rejected the profession in favor of art, each relied strongly on concepts of architectural space as they forged new practices in art. This illustrated publication compares Matta's metaphysical concepts and gestural pictorial practice with Matta-Clark's conceptually driven drawings and cut buildings; illustrates how aspects of Surrealism, especially as filtered through the work of Marcel Duchamp, were adopted by Matta-Clark and his circle; and explores the commonalities and differences in Matta's depictions of interior mindscapes and Matta-Clark's physical actions on buildings in the urban milieu. The catalogue presents essays and research by art historian Briony Fer, art critic Justo Pastor Mellado, architectural theorist Anthony Vidler, and the San Diego Museum of Art's curator of contemporary art, Betti-Sue Hertz.

"Transmission: the art of Matta and Gordon Matta-Clark" presents the first comprehensive examination of the overlapping spheres of art and architecture in the work of two pioneering father and son artists: the Surrealist painter Matta (Roberto Sebastin Antonio Matta Echaurren) (1912-2002) and the multifaceted urban Conceptualist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978). In Atrabiliaros (1991-6) abandoned shoes of "disappeared" Colombian people, half-concealed behind membranes of animal fibre, become ghost-like symbols of mourning. In Salcedo's ongoing untitled works, wooden furnishings, worn by long use and filled with concrete, mutely evoke the lives they once served. American art critic Nancy Princenthal surveys Salcedo's work in terms of the universal themes it evokes, contextualized in discussion of contemporary scultural practice. New York-based poet and curator Carlos Basualdo discusses with the artist her formative influences, which range from the art of precedecessors such as Joseph Beuys to the writings of philosophers and poets. German literary critic Andreas Huyssen focuses on Salcedo's sculpture Unland: The Orphan's Tunic (1997). For the "Arist's Choice", Salcedo has selected two texts: an extract from "Otherwise than being" (1974) by philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, and poems by Paul Celan. Operating as Bureau B+B since 1990, the office has always taken an interdisciplinary approach, employing not just landscape architects and urban planners but also land development experts, architects and industrial designers. It has served as an incubator for some of the Netherlands' leading creative professionals : Winy Maas, Adriaan Geuze, Michael van Gessel, West 8, Karres en Brands and Rietveld Landscape, amog others. The development of Bureau B+B coincides with the emancipation of Dutch postwar landscape architecture and urbanism; self-assured and autonomous, the Bureau soon ranked among the world’s foremost urban institutes, thanks among other things to its design for the Parc de la Villette in Paris (1982), a commission won ex aequo with designers such as Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi. The bureau has always been interdisciplinary, employing landscape architects, urban planners, architects, land development experts and industrial designers. This publication presents a generous selection from its 1,500 projects, including the Dutch Pavilion for the World Expo 2000 in Hanover, the Waldpark in Potsdam and the Wollefoppenpark in Rotterdam.
