Résumé:
Through a collection of 13 chapters, Peggy Deamer examines the profession of architecture not as an abstraction, but as an assemblage of architectural workers. What forces prevent architects from empowering ourselves to be more relevant and better rewarded? How can these forces be set aside by new narratives, new organizations and new methods of production? How can we sit at the decision-making table to combat short-term real estate interests for longer-term social and ethical value? How can we pull architecture- its conceptualization, its pedagogy, and its enactment- into the 21st century without succumbing to its neoliberal paradigm? In addressing these controversial questions, ''Architecture and Labor'' brings contemporary discourses on creative labor to architecture, a discipline devoid of labor consciousness. This book addresses how, not just what, architects produce and focuses not on the past but on the present. It is sympathetic to the particularly intimate way that architects approach their design work while contextualizing that work historically, institutionally, economically, and ideologically. ''Architecture and Labor'' is sure to be a compelling read for pre-professional students, academics, and practitioners.

Résumé:
During US colonial rule in the Philippines, reinforced concrete was used to the near exclusion of all other building materials. In Concrete Colonialism , Diana Jean S. Martinez examines the motivations for and lasting effects of this forgotten colonial policy. Arguing that the pervasive use of reinforced concrete technologies revolutionized techniques of imperial conquest, Martinez shows how concrete reshaped colonialism as a project that sought durable change through the reformation of environments, colonial society, and racialized biologies. Martinez locates the origins of this material revolution in the development of Chicago, highlighting how building this urban center atop exceptionally challenging geology made it possible to transform diverse global ecologies. She details how the material's stability, plasticity, strength, and other qualities served the shifting imperatives of the US colonial regime, playing a central role in defending territory, controlling disease, and constructing monuments to nation and empire. By describing a world irreversibly remade, Martinez urges readers to consider how colonialism persists--in concrete forms--despite claims of its conclusion.

Résumé:
Nova Scotia has a rich heritage of houses dating from the 1700s. Here, the best examples of every important house style over the past 250 years are brought together in full colour. The authors have travelled to all parts of the province to select the finest examples of architectural heritage. Most of these buildings are accessible to the public and some have been carefully restored, allowing you to revisit the way people lived in Nova Scotia’s past. The authors detail how each house style reached Nova Scotia, identifying not only characteristic features but variants unique to the province. They explain how new technologies have affected architectural style, and how the most available building material — wood — was used for houses designed to be constructed of brick, stone and mortar.

Résumé:
"What now? The politics of listening" reflects on the 2015 symposium of the same title, organised by Art in General in collaboration with the Vera List Centre for Art and Politics, which examined the idea of listening as a political act, a pedagogical process, and a protocol for engagement. The publication prompts inquiry into what degree are we able to listen to different kinds of intelligences, and how can we incite receptivity? How do we address the fact that the right to listen is relative, and that the right not to listen, or to remain silent, is also a valid stance? Can we press on and position listening as a political act? And how do we further develop our ability to “listen for what is left out, and why”?
