Résumé:
While it is widely recognized that the advanced architecture of the 1970s left a legacy of experimentation and theoretical speculation as intense as any in architecture's history, there has been no general theory of that ethos. Now, in Architecture's Desire, K. Michael Hays writes an account of the "late avant-garde" as an architecture systematically twisting back on itself, pondering its own historical status, and deliberately exploring architecture's representational possibilities right up to their absolute limits. In close readings of the brooding, melancholy silence of Aldo Rossi, the radically reductive "decompositions" and archaeologies of Peter Eisenman, the carnivalesque excesses of John Hejduk, and the "cinegrammatic" delirium of Bernard Tschumi, Hays narrates the story of architecture confronting its own boundaries with objects of ever more reflexivity, difficulty, and intransigence.

Résumé:
How did a First World urban population come to imagine itself as part of a global anti-colonial movement? This book tackles this and other paradoxes created by the surprising power and influence of Third World decolonization on political activism in 1960s Montreal. In a brilliant history of a turbulent time and place, Mills pulls back the curtain on the decade's activists and intellectuals, showing their engagement both with each other and with people from around the world. He demonstrates how activists of different backgrounds and with different political aims drew on ideas of decolonization to rethink the meanings attached to the politics of sex, race, and class and to imagine themselves as part of a broad transnational movement of anti-colonial and anti-imperialist resistance. The temporary unity forged around ideas of decolonization came undone in the 1970s, however, as many were forced to come to terms with the contradictions and ambiguities of applying ideas of decolonization in Quebec. From linguistic debates to labour unions, and from the political activities of citizens in the city's poorest neighbourhoods to its Caribbean intellectuals, this publication is a political tour of Montreal that reconsiders the meaning and legacy of the city's dissident traditions. It is also a fascinating chapter in the history of postcolonial thought.

Résumé:
RMIT's relationship with Tokyo Institute of Technology began in 1994 with a joint research project in the City of Ogaki in Gifu Prefecture. That project was part of RMIT School of Architecture's continuing commitment to an engagement with the urbanism of its region. "By-Product-Tokyo" is the outcome of a new chapter in this dialogue with TITech. The project was instigated by Shane Murray in 1999 with the receipt of a grant to fund student exchange from the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Association. Nigel Bertram and Marika Neustupny developed the three-month project in Tokyo. This book is itself a by-product of Tokyo, and its contemporary thought. It is an unexpected offshoot of an ongoing line of architectural research being undertaken by a group of Japanese architects and students centred at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Résumé:
An investigation into Shanghai’s rise from peripheral port to urban center. Even before the romanticized golden era of Shanghai in the 1930s, the famed Asian city was remarkable for its uniqueness and East-meets-West cosmopolitanism. Meng Yue analyzes a century-long shift of urbanity from China’s heartland to its shore. During the period between the decline of Jiangnan cities such as Suzhou and Yangzhou and Shanghai’s early twentieth-century rise, the overlapping cultural edges of a failing Chinese royal order and the encroachment of Western imperialists converged. Simultaneously appropriating and resisting imposing forces, Shanghai opened itself to unruly, subversive practices, becoming a crucible of creativity and modernism. Calling into question conventional ways of conceptualizing modernity, colonialism, and intercultural relations, Meng Yue examines such cultural practices as the work of the commercial press, street theater, and literary arts, and shows that what appear to be minor cultural changes often signal the presence of larger political and economic developments. Engaging theories of modernity and postcolonial and global cultural studies, Meng Yue reveals the paradoxical interdependence between imperial and imperialist histories and the retranslation of culture that characterized the most notable result of China’s urban relocation—the emergence of the international city of Shanghai.

Résumé:
"Against reason, volume 1" is published alongside the "Tony Smith catalogue raisonné: Sculpture", itself the first of two volumes—the other focusing on architecture—documenting the artist's career. This book reveals the depth and complexity of Smith's oeuvre in sculpture while positioning its transdisciplinary nature in dialogue with contemporary practitioners. Commissioned essays by art historians and curators and visual projects by artists offer renewed perspectives on a variety of cultural systems, exploring the ongoing vitality of Smith's work. Their contributions reflect upon the modernist era in which Smith's work was produced to think through ingrained ideologies, revealing other, parallel modernisms and histories.

Should architectural criticism be enlightening? What should be the ethical basis of it, and can it still be objective in the context of paid content? Should it outline ideal practices and help in the creation of a better built environment? Architectural criticism is at a crucial juncture today. Incisive architectural criticism is rare, while the definition of criticism itself has become more and more opaque in the digital world. The 2021 International Conference on Architecture Criticism has gathered exceptional papers that define the purposes and methods of architectural criticism of today. The resulting book is a collection of essays that offer essential independent voices on architecture criticism in a highly challenging media environment. Incisive and thought-provoking, ‘On duty and power on architectural criticism’ provides concrete case studies for future generations of architectural critics.

Résumé:
The etchings of the Italian printmaker, architect, and antiquarian Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–78) have long mesmerized viewers. But, as Victor Plahte Tschudi shows, artists and writers of the modern era found in these works—Piranesi's visions of contradictory space, endless vistas, and self-perpetuating architecture—a formulation of the modern. In this volume, Tschudi explores the complex appropriation and continual rediscoveries of Piranesi by modern literature, photography, art, film, and architecture. Tracing the ways that the modern age constructed itself and its origin through Piranesi across genres, he shows, for example, how Piranesi's work formulates the ideas of “contrast” in photography, “abstraction” in painting and “montage” in cinema. Tschudi's exploration of Piranesi's influence on modern architectural discourse includes interviews with such distinguished architects as Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Steven Holl, and Rem Koolhaas.

What does it mean to be a capital when Europe is extending and establishing itself beyond the models of nation states? How can the European idea be embodied in the buildings and urban investment processes which represent it? The contributions in this volume offer essential matter for reflection on the future of Brussels with regard to its urban development which marks the European presence in the city as well as its identity and the condition of its inhabitants
