Résumé:
What is architectural form? What does architectural form mean? And why is it so significant today? Despite the historical signi?cance of form in architecture, the subject is frequently undervalued in debate. The publication The Form of Form examines a variety of ideas regarding form, not only through aesthetic and technological approaches, but also from social and political points of view. "The form of form" is the official publication of the same-named 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale. The content of the book underlines the cultural and technical relevance of architecture within society. It aims to foster new thoughts as we reach the dawn of a rapidly changing society driven by fast access to information. After all the tensions and frictions that happen during the physical and social transformations of our cities and landscapes, when all the fuss is over and the different agents who contributed to change have left the field of play, what is left is a built form. Citizens live among forms; architectural forms have endured from the past and they will populate the future.

Résumé:
Ray Fenwick has pioneered his own medium of storytelling, one best described as "typographical comics." Hall of Best Knowledge is presented as a handsome, personal journal written by an unnamed voice, referred to only as "The Author." Little is known about him; he makes occasional, derogatory references to a twin brother and younger sibling, but reveals little else. He clearly fashions himself a genius, writing with a faux-aristocratic air, and it is presumably his belief in his own genius that leads him to want to share his knowledge with the world. Each page features information such as "It hardly needs mentioning that riding a pony is no intellectual triumph.... If riding a pony is so fantastic, why have I never read of any renowned pony-riding genius? It is because such a person does not exist, making it a foolish waste of time unworthy of attention." These pearls of wisdom are lettered in an elegant, almost obsessive fashion, entirely hand-crafted and bedecked with Ionic columns and fleurs-de-lis.

Résumé:
Edited by Professor Maia Engeli and with a contribution by Professor Gerhard Schmitt, both of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich), this book presents 33 exciting new projects which demonstrate the growing significance of CAAD for today's architects. Divided into 5 main chapters: Design in Space and Time; Learning and Creative Collaboration; Virtual Environments; IT and Practice; and Blurring Boundaries, the projects illustrate how computers can be used innovatively and creatively in designing physical, virtual and hybrid architecture. Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between man and computer, and also on the aesthetic aspects. The book is accompanied by a CD-Rom which documents the design processes through animation sequences, demonstrating the dynamic features of the projects. Whilst these tools, installations and multi-media projects have arisen out of the field of architecture, they exceed the narrow confines of this discipline to touch upon areas such as interior design, graphic design and information technology. The designs presented are colourful and complex, seeking to fire the imagination in creating a fitting environment for today's society.

Résumé:
The discovery of and excavations at Pompeii in the second half of the eighteenth century not only provided historians with a trove of information about ancient Roman civilization but also fired artists' imaginations and inaugurated the vogue for the "Pompeian style" that so influenced the West in the nineteenth century. This book reproduces, along with commentary, "Le case i monumenti di Pompeii" (1854) of Fausto and Felice Niccolini, the first work to present completely and systematically all the public and private buildings so far excavated in Pompeii. It features the wondrous watercolors the Niccolinis created to document Pompeii and is thus a beautiful and essential tool in understanding the excavated remains themselves and how the modern archaeologists perceived and recorded the ancient world. These reproduced drawings of the excavations are accompanied by texts that explain the documents by the Niccolinis, as well as the evolution of the Pompeian style in Europe, the pictorial representation of Pompeii in the nineteenth century from engravings to photographs, and the evolving styles of archaeological documentation.

A pavilion of cycles at Expo in Hanover. An interdisciplinary work involving architecture, scenography, graphics, sound, light, film, drama and an actual tornado, created by Atelier Brückner for the Expo 2000. Dual System Deutschland, a company which is responsible for the reuse and recycling of packaging in Germany commissioned the Stuttgart firm Atelier Brückner to create a pavilion at the EXPO in Hanover which would reflect the company's vision of combining the product cycle with the environment and use of resources in a responsible way. The journey through this cycle is represented visually through the architecture and staging of the pavilion. Living plants, real objects, information, light and sound are brought together and provide an exciting backdrop for the dramatic highlight - a 25m high tornado which was generated every hour. This book shows primarily creative process leading to the final design and architecture of the Cyclebowl. Enhanced with technical details of the innovative facades, the publication is a fascinating documentation of architecture as a means of conveying ideas.

Résumé:
In "The hidden factor," Steven Skaggs provides a beautifully illustrated and explained introduction to the mark—from those as physical as a scratch made by an animal, to those as accidental as a splatter of paint, to those as intentional as hand-drawn characters. Skaggs makes the case that, in the visual arts, gestures and mark-making operate on an equal level with image and word. While we might think of content as that which is communicated through text and images, Skaggs shows, through visual examples, that the gestural mark is often hidden within both images and the typographic forms that convey words. By mapping different kinds of marks and showing how marks combine with image and word, "The hidden factor" explains that our desire for conceptual information suppresses our awareness of marking. This is especially the case with the tension between word and mark, where we desire legibility. As a result, one of the most conservative of arts—calligraphy—has the potential of being the most radical, since gesturally expressive handwriting is a natural threat to the legibility of a text.

Résumé:
Jacopo de' Barbari's "View of Venice," a woodcut first printed in the year 1500, presents a bird's-eye portrait of Venice at its peak as an international hub of trade, art, and culture. An artistic and cartographic masterpiece of the Renaissance, the View depicts Venice as a vibrant, waterborne city interconnected by canals and bridges and filled with ornate buildings, elaborate gardens, and seafaring vessels. The contributors to "A view of Venice: Portrait of a Renaissance city" draw on a high-resolution digital scan of the over nine-foot-wide composite print to examine the complexities of this extraordinary woodcut and portrayal of early modern Venetian life. The essays show how the View constitutes an advanced material artifact of artistic, humanist, and scientific culture. They also outline the ways the print reveals information about the city's economic and military power, religious and social infrastructures, and cosmopolitan residents. Featuring methodological advancements in the digital humanities, "A view of Venice" highlights the reality and myths of a topographically unique, mystical city and its place in the world.

Résumé:
From 1906 to 1934, Eugene de Salignac shot over twenty thousand 8-by-10-inch glass-plate negatives of New York City. As sole photographer at the Department of Bridges/Plant and Structures during that period of dizzying growth, he documented the creation of the city's modern infrastructure—bridges, major municipal buildings, roads, and subways. For years these remarkably lyrical photographs have been used in books and films, but never credited to de Salignac. New York Rises is the first monograph to present them as an aesthetically coherent oeuvre by a photographer with a unique vision. As meticulous in his record keeping as he was creative in his photography, de Salignac left five handwritten logs that identify each negative by place and exact date. This information is complemented throughout the book by narrative captions expanding on themes such as accidents, bridges, workers, and the Depression. Michael Lorenzini has unearthed primary sources to reconstruct de Salignac's biography. Kevin Moore explores his work in the context of other photographers of the period, including Eugène Atget and Berenice Abbott.

Résumé:
Life is a building site : not just since the German film of that name was released, the building site has been a popular metaphor for the patchwork plans of contemporary life. The phenomenon of the building site runs through our everyday lives, but it largely remains behind construction site fences. This volume looks behind the barriers and focuses on the building site as such for the first time. With authoritative information and reflection from a variety of perspectives, some quite surprising, the building site is presented as an extraordinary place in the city and as a microcosm that operates under heavy pressures of time and costs. With essays on specific building sites such as the megaproject Sihlcity in Zurich or the La Défense building site in Paris, interviews with architects and construction managers, and impressive illustrations, the book leaps into a gap in the urban landscape. The publication is rounded out by artistic, photographic interventions like those of Miklos Gaals, who is known for his photographs that turn urban scenes into toys.
