Résumé:
In the very near future energy-efficient building will cease to be the exception but will be the rule. Whether insulating glazing, multifunctional facades or organic solar cells, there have been important new developments in the areas of solar thermal technology, photovoltaics, heating and ventilation technology which can make a significant contribution to the conservation of natural resources in sustainable building. They are suitable for a wide range of uses from large-scale urban-planning projects, to individual single family houses. This publication contains carefully selected articles which cover such essential topics as passive and active systems, the development of new insulating materials, and concepts for entire residential estates. They take into consideration all areas of solar building, providing information on planning methods and techniques which will enable the user to assess and apply the individual measures correctly. The essays are complemented by a selection of examples which demonstrate the technical and creative possibilities in realized projects. Solar energy can be successfully used in all kinds of projects – single family housing, office buildings, industrial buildings, and residential concepts, and this volume presents innovative solutions with full plans and large scale details, revealing the significance of an integral planning process.

Résumé:
The open terrain of new media is closing fast. Market concentration, legal consolidation and tightening governmental control have effectively ended the myth of the free and open networks. In Delusive Spaces, Eric Kluitenberg takes a critical position that retains a utopian potential for emerging media cultures. The book investigates the archeology of media and machine, mapping the different methods and metaphors that speak about technology. Returning to the present, Kluitenberg discusses the cultural use of new media in an age of post-governmental politics. Delusive Spaces concludes with the impossibility of representation. Going beyond the obvious delusions of the 'new' and the 'free', Kluitenberg theorizes artistic practices and European cultural policies, demonstrating a provocative engagement with the utopian dimension of technology. Eric Kluitenberg is a Dutch media theorist, writer and organizer. Since the late 1980s, he has been involved in numerous international projects in the field of electronic art, media culture, and information politics. Kluitenberg heads the media program at De Balie, Centre for Culture and Politics in Amsterdam. He is the editor of the Book of Imaginary Media (NAi Publishers, 2006) and the theme issue Hybrid Space of Open, journal on art and the public domain (2007).

How long ago have you been to an exhibition or an event? What information and amusement you get from it? Did you enjoy it? We are thrilled to present you our latest title When Space Meets Art/When Art Meets Space which leads you to taste and feel all sorts of events comprehensively. An exhibition, a party or any kinds of event can encompass all design areas. For many of us who usually focus only on the exhibited items or the subject of events, few of us ever pay attention to the whole design environment. This title will guide you to look and feel it through two key components: spatial design and graphic elements. From 3D to 2D, it demonstrates how structural work including venue setups from exterior to interior makes the whole event outstanding and turn into exceptional eye-catching fascination and how graphic elements from venue decorations to promotional items makes consistency to reflect the whole event concept and affect the affiliation from the exhibited subjects to audience. By that, the title ultimately reveals how these objects affect your sense and blow up your impression to particular events.

Résumé:
Warhol’s Factory of the 1960s, Minimalism’s assembly-line aesthetics, conceptual and feminist concern with workers’ conditions in the 1970s—these are among the antecedents of a renewed focus on the work of art: labor as artistic activity, as artistic method and as object of artistic engagement. In 2002, the “Work Ethic” exhibition curated by Helen Molesworth at the Baltimore Museum of Art took its cue from recent art to spotlight this earlier era of artistic practice in which activity became as valid as, and often dispensed with, object-production. Revealed through this prism was “dematerialized” art’s close and critical relation to the emergent information age’s criteria of management, production and skill. By 2015, the Venice Biennale reflected artists’ wider concern with global economic and social crises, centered on exploitative and precarious worlds of employment. Yet while art increasingly engages with human travail, work’s significance in itself is seldom addressed by critics. This anthology explicitly investigates work in relation to contemporary art, surveying artistic strategies that grapple with the complexities of being an art worker in the new economy, a postproducer, a collaborator, a fabricator, a striker, an ethical campaigner, or would-be transformer of labor from oppression to liberation.

Résumé:
Vienna-based architect Martin Feiersinger and his brother, artist and photographer Werner Feiersinger, have traveled extensively across Northern Italy in order to document the region’s modern architecture after World War II. "Italomodern 1 and 2" are the result of their travels, the most authoritative survey of Northern Italy’s architecture between 1946 and 1976. In their study, they have focused exclusively on distinctive buildings rather than entire urban structures, and they have selected the included projects as exemplary representations of neorealism, rationalism, brutalism, and organic styles. "Italomodern 1" features 84 buildings and "Italomodern 2" contains an additional 132 buildings. All of them are represented with photographs, a concise text, the exact address, and selected floor plans, sections, or elevations. The images present a subjective point of view, showing each building in its present state. An appendix provides rich information on the architects and other selected buildings and further reading for each firm. The books offer a glimpse into an era when society’s aspirations found expression in the built environment. Each volume is self-contained and also makes an insightful and useful guide for architecture lovers and travelers.

Résumé:
In order to analyze the phenomenon of late Gothic “Cell Vaults“, it is essential to understand the building process, the characteristics of the specifications formulated in planning, and the design criteria for these structures. On one hand, the reasons for the invention of this particular type of vaulted ceiling in the late 15th century and its spread over a large area are usually viewed from a technological standpoint. On the other hand, the appearance of these vaults, in particular the character of their curves and surfaces, can only be described against this background. As it happens, we have no recourse to contemporary information regarding the construction techniques or the design specifications of cell vaults. This constitutes a methodological problem: how is it possible, starting from the existing artifact, to formulate a clear idea of not only the production of the vaults but also the decision-making and communication processes associated with their making? Within the research project “Form, Construction and Design Principles of late Gothic Cell Vaults – ‘Reverse Engineering’ and Experimental Archaeology”, ways of thinking about the genesis of these particular vaults are formulated.

Quality living in old age is one of the important topics of our time. Architects and builders can contribute innovative types of housing, intelligent concepts for barrier-free buildings, and advanced systems of care for people who are fragile or suffering from dementia. Intelligent design solutions can push back the limits on housing and care, on residential architecture and care facilities, on individual, collective, and assisted forms of housing, and even on the various phases of life in favor of a comprehensive trend toward integrated forms of housing. This volume in the series Design Manuals optimizes the concept, content, and presentation of the series to improve its use by the customer. A third of the volume provides detailed expert information from around fifteen contributors, including general questions of energy management and sustainability, open space, and product design. A section of examples provides a building typology, presenting approximately forty international buildings in analyses of up to eight pages that offer exemplary solutions for multigenerational buildings, assisted living, housing for people with dementia and other special target groups, old persons’ homes, nursing homes, and integrated projects.

Résumé:
***ÉPUISÉE / OUT OF PRINT*** "Cities in transition" deals with the effects of globalization and internationalization in relation to urbanism and critical assessment in contemporary theory. The book brings together internationally known authors from many countries including England, the USA, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands. A diversity of critical positions on spatial and social questions is discussed on an international level. The theme of globalization is queried concerning the relation of urban and port developments in Tokyo's Bay Area and in Rotterdam. Cities have historically allowed the coming about of national economies, politics and societies we can think of as centralized. In several contributions this aspect is examined from the viewpoint of the flâneur, a creature of the metropolis, Parisian above all. As for their present day economic function, cities provide agglomeration economies, with a massive concentration of information on the latest developments. The book argues for a new reflexivity related to both economic and cultural understanding of our world. Cities in Transition is the third volume in the "Stylos critical landscape" series, issued by the Faculty of architecture of Delft university of technology.

Résumé:
Offices, as a category of building, have probably faced more challenges and undergone more dramatic changes in the last few years than most other kinds of buildings. Increasing economic globalization, new information and communication technologies, and ecological considerations are all making demands on a branch of architecture which for nearly a century had been marked by the construction norms and standards, and the requirements of office organisation. These old solutions are, however, no longer viable for many modern companies, where flexibility and mobility determine the working day of a new generation of office nomads, and architecture is having to adapt. With some 70 significant international examples taken from the last five years (including examples from Norman Foster, Frank O. Gehry, Thomas Herzog, Morphosis MVRDV, Renzo Piano, SOM), the authors and editors show how the new issues facing architects can be resolved. In addition to introductory texts there are also thematic contributions by experts in various disciplines on related topics including the new models of work organisation, façade technology, climatic regulation, lighting etc. Similar to our enormously successful Floor Plan Atlas, this volume will be a crucial standard work in the design of offices.
