Résumé:
First published in France in 1999, Preliminary Materials for a Theory of the Young-Girl dissects the impossibility of love under Empire. The Young-Girl is consumer society's total product and model citizen: whatever "type" of Young-Girl she may embody, whether by whim or concerted performance, she can only seduce by consuming. Filled with the language of French women's magazines, rooted in Proust's figure of Albertine and the amusing misery of (teenage) romance in Witold Gombrowicz's Ferdydurke, and informed by Pierre Klossowski's notion of "living currency" and libidinal economy, the essay diagnoses -- and makes visible -- a phenomenon that is so ubiquitous as to have become transparent.

Résumé:
Every Man Is an Artist investigates Joseph Beuys’ (1921–1986) voluminous output of multiples. For Beuys, multiples were a vehicle for communication, discussion and debate--a means for disseminating his philosophy beyond a collector audience and putting broader progressive ideas into circulation. While other artists focused on creating games or do-it-yourself performances, Beuys’ pieces generally function as didactic tokens of a larger spiritual agenda, such as a set of wooden boxes in which people may store their thoughts. With a wealth of reproductions (120 in color), this volume offers a concise overview of Beuys’ politicization of aesthetics and the distribution of art.

Rosie may seem quiet during the day, but at night she’s a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) comes for a visit and mentions her one unfinished goal — to fly — Rosie sets to work building a contraption to make her aunt’s dream come true. But when her contraption doesn’t fly but rather hovers for a moment and then crashes, Rosie deems the invention a failure. On the contrary, Aunt Rose insists that Rosie’s contraption was a raging success: you can only truly fail, she explains, if you quit.

Résumé:
As water becomes the next critical commodity in a rapidly warming world, the prestigious Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg Prize for industrial design articles was awarded in 2007 to German designer Lars Meyer, for a brilliantly simple proposal to purify drinking water in Bangladesh. After studying low-tech possibilities for water purification – and analyzing the many failures of systems provided by conventional aid schemes – Meyer came up with an inexpensive (and close to foolproof) process using the seeds of a fast-growing tropical tree and indigenous pottery-making. The designer’s respect for the culture of Bangladesh is the motivating force behind this potentially world-changing project. A small but fascinating book.

Résumé:
The Swedish photographer Julia Hetta photographed the images in this book on the Swedish island of Fårö in the Baltic Sea, in close collaboration with her friend, the artist Åsa Stenerhag. Her (mostly) black-and-white photographs in "Island" depict their subjects—from trees (the branches, leaves, trunks of trees), rocks (the shapes, layers, textures of rocks), human beings (the faces, hair, expressions, clothes of human beings)—both in relation to one another and with a more singular focus. The book imbues its subjects with stillness and power. Though calm, the atmosphere is one of capacious potential. The titular island may as well be from another dimension. Black, fragile, powerful; a world of romance after the despair.

Résumé:
Delayed by the Spanish Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship under Franco, the emergence of modernity in Spain may have been late in coming, but today's young architects are making up for lost time in a spectacular way. Original personalities like César Manrique Cabrera marked a move toward the modern in the 1960s while Richard Bofill's innovative work in the 70s helped bring Spanish architecture to the world stage. In the 1990s, architects such as Rafael Moneo and Santiago Calatrava began to create the look of contemporary architecture in Spain as we know it today. From a modern interpretation of a bullring to cutting-edge green architecture, the book covers a dizzying variety of architectural innovation.
