Résumé:
The notion of impermanence underlies, to a significant extent, the urban design language of Hong Kong. The city intensely urban environment has long reflected embedded patterns of change and temporality in both its physical and cultural dimensions, a forever reconstructed city of dislocation, adaptation and imagination. These characteristics are intrinsically interwoven within Hong Kong s street and spatial patterns, producing a special sense of immediacy and transience insinuated with the fabric and memory of the city. This may stem on one hand from a philosophy of change inherent in cultural traditions, but on the other it reflects more tangible aspects of the streetscape accumulated from historical imprints, regimes of temporarily, and the constant renewal and transformation of the urban environment.

Résumé:
In 1993, the artist Vito Acconci and the architect Steven Holl were invited to redesign the then existing façade of the Storefront Gallery in New York. As a response to its urban context and its function as an art space - the gallery is situated on the ground floor of a low building on the outskirts of Soho - Acconci and Holl created a versatile façade which may be opened up in different ways according to the season or function as an optical screen separating the inner space from the street. The different functions, answering to the needs of inner and outer space and creating links and transparencies or establishing borders, serve to provide visitors with ever-changing local and spatial relations.

Résumé:
"Racialized incarceration" constitutes a form of sequel to issues 4 (Mar-Apr. 2016, "Carceral environments") and 5 (May-June 2016, "Design & racism"). This issue builds on these two precedents in demonstrating that incarceration is one of the horizons of processes of racialization and that architecture is an unsurpassable instrument of its enforcement. Through historical examples (concentration camps of Romani people in France, prison cities of Japanese and Japanese American people in the United States, an Aborigene prison in Australia) and contemporary ones (US prison industrial complex, immigrant detention centers in Canada, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon), The Funambulist’s 12th issue intends to illustrate how the violence of colonial and structural forms of racism endure time and materialize in space.

Résumé:
This publication gathers a diversity of voices and perspectives with the aim of capturing methods and expressions of care and communal effort, as well as theoretical reflections on sympathy as a position of caring-for. While sympathy may carry connotations of charity, as that which acts from a distance, the publication underscores sympathy as what also enables forms of action and imagination. It is by way of sympathy that interconnectivity and interdependency are felt as well as made categorical, articulating a position of concern and collaboration especially beyond one's immediate relational circles. From interpersonal care to rhythms of collaboration and resistance, the publication offers reflections on how personal compassion and impersonal force can be deployed, lending to a disposition of solidarity and the crafting of unlikely companionships.

Résumé:
Who is Amsterdam, really? This book presents the Dutch capital as experienced by the residents themselves. Many who call Amsterdam home – especially those most often pushed to the margins – translate their experiences into maps, drawings, photos, and graphics. You’ll see streets you’ve not yet walked down, far beyond the historical centre, through the eyes of people you may not have met, but who could be your neighbours. These pages illustrate unsung neighbourhoods, subjective mundanities, vital criticism, and declarations of love, creating a nuanced collection that captures something difficult to quantify or make tangible: how cultures shape a city. Initiated by the Architecture Centre of Amsterdam (Arcam), this book, and the plural realities within it, reflect on how to make the city a better place, for everyone.

Résumé:
The Nature of Photographs is the essential primer of photography, not only for students but for anyone with an interest in the medium. In this book, Shore explores ways of understanding photographs from all periods and of all types - from iconic images to found photographs, from negatives to digital files. Its aim is not to explore photographic content – the subject of an image – but to describe the physical and formal attributes of a photographic print, the very elements that form the tools a photographer uses to define and interpret that content. By teaching us how to look at photographs and helping us to see the world the way the photographer may have seen it, Shore also teaches us a way of looking at the world around us.

Welcome to the 59th issue of ''The Funambulist'' (May-June 2025), dedicated to Black Indigeneities. The association of these two terms will certainly appear obvious to many, while it might surprise others, depending on readers’ personal and regional imaginaries. The issue examines the Indigeneity-Blackness nexus in Melanesia —in Fiji (Mara Mahoney and Ratu Ropate Rakuita Wailutu Kama) and beyond, in Aotearoa New Zealand (Nathan Rew and Makanaka Tuwe)—in several regions of the African Continent—South Africa (Zoé Samudzi and Mpho Matheolane/Nolan Oswald Dennis), Nubia (Menna Agha), Eritrea (Semhar Haile), and the Gabonese forests (Maya Mihindou)—in the Caribbean—Guiana (Karl Joseph and Marc-Alexandre Tareau) and Haiti (Tessa Mars)—as well as in the diaspora. The cover artwork by Tessa Mars.
