Résumé:
Divided into three sections, "The Smart House" illustrates how technology is changing our homes. The book looks at three areas: Smart Technology, which examines five aspects of technology and how it's being integrated throughout the house: lighting design and window treatments; audio and video entertainment; voice and data management; security and access; and environmental controls and energy management. Smart Materials, which shows new building materials such as titanium, electronic glass that can become transparent or opaque at the flick of a switch, polycarbonate materials, laser-perforated metals, all of which are changing the way homes are built and the ways in which we use and perceive spaces within these structures. Smart Design looks at more extravagant innovations such as swimming pools cantilevered in mid-air, windows that recreate digital views at night, interior spaces whose functions are transformed through architectural slight of hand and computer aided design, all of which point to new ways of thinking about how we live and how we use space in this increasingly space-challenged world. Case studies of ten recently constructed homes are detailed to illustrate each aspect of this technology and to show the full potential technology affords modern home design.

Résumé:
''Los Angeles Lost and Found'' is a collection of essays and photographs that explores Los Angeles as a city of constant reinvention, where history is often buried beneath layers of change. Experience designer Margaret Chandra Kerrison uses the lens of narrative placemaking to examine how LA’s physical spaces—its streets, neighborhoods, and landmarks—shape both individual and collective identity. What sets this collection apart is Kerrison’s deeply personal approach. She weaves her own story into the fabric of the city’s landscape, grounding cultural analysis in lived experience. Her reflections on the recent Los Angeles wildfires are especially poignant, revealing how natural disaster can strip a place down to its essence and reshape the stories we tell about it. Through these moments of vulnerability, she illustrates how loss and resilience are embedded in the urban environment. Blending memoir with observation, Kerrison highlights how overlooked spaces carry emotional weight and cultural memory. In doing so, she invites readers to view Los Angeles not just as a city of spectacle, but as a living, breathing narrative. Los Angeles Lost and Found is both intimate and expansive, offering a portrait of a city that continues to inspire and challenge those who call it home—or dream of doing so.

Résumé:
Has COVID-19 ushered in the end of the office? Or is it the office’s final triumph? For decades, futurologists have prophesied a boundaryless working world, freed from the cramped confines of the office. During the COVID-19 crisis, employees around the globe got a taste of it. Confined by lockdown to their homes, they met, mingled, collaborated, and created electronically. At length, they returned to something approaching normality. Or had they glimpsed the normal to come? In''The momentous, uneventful day,'' Gideon Haigh reflects on our ambivalent relationship to office work and office life, how we ended up with the offices we have, how they have reflected our best and worst instincts, and how these might be affected by a world in a time of contagion. Like the factory in the nineteenth century, the office was the characteristic building form of the twentieth, reshaping our cities, redirecting our lives. We all have a stake in how it will change in the twenty-first. Enlivened by copious citations from literature, film, memoir, and corporate history, and interspersed with relevant images,''The momentous, uneventful day'' is the ideal companion for a lively current debate about the role offices will play in the future.

Résumé:
Few activities seem to promise as much happiness as going travelling: taking off for somewhere else, somewhere far from home, a place with more interesting weather, customs and landscapes. But although we are inundated with advice on where to travel to, we seldom ask why we go and how we might become more fulfilled by doing so. With the help of a selection of writers, artists and thinkers, Alain de Botton provides invaluable insights into everything from holiday romance to hotel minibars, airports to sightseeing. The perfect antidote to those guides that tell us what to do when we get there, this book tries to explain why we really went in the first place - and helpfully suggest how we might be happier on our journeys.
