Résumé:
Exist, orient, store, inebriate, measure, exchange, store, recite, write, think, navigate, love, share, rule, play, boil, adore, pierce, kill . . . The curators Andrea Branzi and Kenya Hara selected one hundred verbs, connected to one hundred objects, to let us travel across human history; words which relate to actions which relate to objects. Walking through the exhibition Neo-Prehistory at Triennale di Milano and reading this book means becoming lost in a space out of time, dark and multiplied by mirrors that make the exhibition apparently boundless. An infinite space where the hypnotic sequence of artifacts is emphasized by the primeval sound of a heartbeat slowing down and then accelerating rhythmically in a mesmeric cycle.

Résumé:
In the first book devoted to Rimbaud's lost voyage to Asia; novelist and critic Jamie James reviews everything that is known about the episode; from there, he imaginatively spirals into a reconstruction of what the poet must have seen, and informed speculation about what he might have done, vividly recreating life in nineteenth-century Java along the way. Rimbaud in Java concludes with an inquiry into what the Orient represented in the poet's imagination, with a scandalous, amusing history of French orientalism. James surprising book is a richly concentrated blend of biography, criticism and thought-travel, which brings into sharp focus this brief encounter between a great writer and a vanished world.

Travel the cities of the world alongside some of their oldest citizens, exploring the trees of Buenos Aires to Berlin, San Francisco to Sydney, in this visually stunning, modern glossary of our city trees. Through finding a Kentucky yellowwood in Hannover, the 1,000-year-old olive trees in Athens or even the world’s tallest trees that line the West Coast of North America, we come to learn the hidden histories of places that are wrapped up in these botanical giants. Brought to life by beautiful artwork, Urban Arboreal is an ode to urban trees and the cherished place they hold in the hearts of city dwellers – not least because they are vital to the very air we breathe.

Résumé:
Before architectural postmodernism was named as such, the process of postmodernizing architecture had already begun implicating architectural work in the increasingly information-driven logic of the late twentieth century. Though radical, the effects of this process have long been excluded from the predominant histories of postmodernism, which continue to rely on notions of individual and creative genius, architectural autonomy, and stylistic genealogies. Architecture Itself and Other Postmodernization Effects places material devices, such as Pantone chips, research grant applications, questionnaires, Xerography, and travel photography, at the forefront of a counter-narrative that recasts these informatic procedures as fundamentally architectural and as the primary of catalysts of the loose agglomeration of styles that was once called postmodernism.

Résumé:
In this publication, Raffaele Milani interprets natural landscapes as an aesthetic category. Drawing from philosophical traditions, literature, and art, he calls the reader's attention to a special consciousness, originally established during the pre-Romantic age, that has become a distinctive feature of contemporary spirituality. Focusing on the definition of landscapes in relation to the concepts of nature, environment, territory, and man-made settings such as gardens and cities, Milani examines the origins of the predilection for natural scenery in the works of landscape painters and in travel literature. He addresses the distinctness of the aesthetic experience of landscapes, analyses the role of aesthetic categories, and explores landscape art as a medium of contemplation.

Résumé:
In this meditation on ruins, Christopher Woodward takes us on a thousand-year journey from the plains of Troy to the monuments of ancient Rome, from the crumbling palaces of Sicily, Cuba, and Zanzibar to the rubble of the London Blitz. With an exquisite sense of romantic melancholy, we encounter the teenage Byron in the moldering Newstead Abbey, Flaubert watching the buzzards on the pyramids, Henry James in the Colosseum, and Freud at Pompeii. We travel the Appian Way with Dickens and behold the Baths of Caracalla with Shelley. An exhilarating tour, at once elegant and stimulating, "In Ruins" casts an exalting spell as it explores the bewitching power of architectural remains and their persistent hold on the imagination.

Résumé:
Bridges are such ubiquitous features of the built environment that we cross most of them barely acknowledging their presence. Certain bridges, however, command attention: for their utility facilitating travel from here to there; for their size, setting, beauty, or historical associations. Ordinary or spellbinding, every bridge is a response to a problem—the spanning of a river or other obstacle, solved more or less elegantly. This visual sourcebook surveys American bridges from coast to coast in terms of four fundamental structural types (beam, arch, truss, and suspension) and the special category of movable bridges (swing, lift, and bascule), showing how similar structural ideas have been addressed by different designers, refined over time, and rendered in various building materials.

From the ruins of Palmyra in the Syrian desert to the ghost town of Bodie, the painted churches of Sucevita in Romania, and a fire festival in a Japanese village, Michael Webb has ventured far afield in search of the rare and beautiful. He recalls memorable experiences of people and places over eight decades of travel around the world, and some of the buildings and landscapes that have left a lasting impression. It's getting harder to find places that have not been commercialized and overwhelmed by mass tourism, but they can still be found, even in the most popular destinations. Webb's recommendations should inspire you to get off the beaten track and make your own discoveries.

Résumé:
In Zin Taylor’s ‘Ambient Visions of a Dot’, the artist records a day spent walking around the coastal village of Shimoda, Japan. Captured in black and white, using an old Sony Cyber-shot camera, the high contrast photographs explore a landscape rich with allegorical content. As a process of creation Taylor uses the camera as a skillful travel companion, one that is particularly adept at teasing out the sublimated influences embedded within this bucolic environment. The resulting images, along with a text written by the artist, address the abstract, surreal, uncanny, and sometimes hallucinogenic transformations of one thing into another. A series of ambient visions that document a landscape’s whimsical metamorphosis into a language of chromatic form.
