Résumé:
It may come as no surprise that only two percent of new homebuyers work directly with an architect to design the space in which they will live—indeed, architects are usually seen as a luxury most of us, the other ninety-eight percent, can't afford. Yet, why shouldn't more people call on the services of architects? With fierce competition for few commissions, why do architects not seek out other sources of work and income? Now, acting within larger institutions or on their own, many architects are taking local initiatives to address the underserved, particularly the poor. "Good Deeds, Good Design" presents the best new thoughts and practices in this emerging movement toward an architecture that serves a broader population. In this book, architecture firms, community design centers, design/build programs, and service-based organizations offer their plans for buildings for the other ninety-eight percent. Twenty-eight essays and case studies illustrate successes and failures and raise both design and social issues.

Résumé:
This book is built from images, drawings and texts. These three types of documents are exposed in an elemental way, alone in the center of each page and isolated from the project to which they belong. The authors organized the inventory from a set of documents that first claim their independence and then undergo a peer dialogue. These two actions may seem to cancel each other out, but they actually both reaffirm a very basic idea, which holds that the interest of a conversation is closely related to the consistency of its interlocutors. The conversation that arises from each diptych is precisely what stimulates the appearance of a tacit project. A project that bypasses material organizations and that is only possible due the intervention of an active reader, capable of establishing connections between the printed documents. This book is a twofold response to what are the disciplinary assets that the architecture studio Adamo-Faiden produces and how they should be organized to accurately delineate the authors’ interests.

Résumé:
Western thinking has long been dominated by essence, by a preoccupation with that which dwells in itself and delimits itself from the other. By contrast, Far Eastern thought is centred not on essence but on absence. The fundamental topos of Far Eastern thinking is not being but ‘the way’ (dao), which lacks the solidity and fixedness of essence. The difference between essence and absence is the difference between being and path, between dwelling and wandering. '‘A Zen monk should be without fixed abode, like the clouds, and without fixed support, like water’', said the Japanese Zen master Dogen. Drawing on this fundamental distinction between essence and absence, Byung-Chul Han explores the differences between Western and Far Eastern philosophy, aesthetics, architecture and art, shedding fresh light on a culture of absence that may at first sight appear strange and unfamiliar to those in the West whose ways of thinking have been shaped for centuries by the preoccupation with essence.

Résumé:
Paul Hawken, the entrepreneur behind the Smith & Hawken gardening supplies empire, is no ordinary capitalist. Drawing as much on Baba Ram Dass and Vaclav Havel as he does on Peter Drucker and WalMart for his case studies, Hawken is on a one-man crusade to reform our economic system by demanding that First World businesses reduce their consumption of energy and resources by 80 percent in the next 50 years. As if that weren't enough, Hawken argues that business goals should be redefined to embrace such fuzzy categories as whether the work is aesthetically pleasing and the employees are having fun; this applies to corporate giants and mom-and-pop operations alike. He proposes a culture of business in which the real world, the natural world, is allowed to flourish as well, and in which the planet's needs are addressed. Wall Street may not be ready for Hawken's provocative brand of environmental awareness, but this fine book is full of captivating ideas.

Résumé:
Dump or rich source – the "free materials" discovered on the street, on wasteland and on building site rubbish dumps and recycled by Martin Kaltwasser and Folke Köbberling experience incredible metamorphoses. Pavilions, villages of huts and even whole houses are appearing over night. Since 2002 the artists have been using public space as their field of experiment in projects on the use of (free) resources. In installations, exhibitions and most frequently, in actual interventions they question the conditions of urban life determined by privatisation and economisation. Through realised projects the book reveals simple ways of livening up and re-appropriating the " City as a Resource" and thus offers new components in an alternative to conventional urban planning. Köbberling and Kaltwasser propose informal and self-organised structures rather than the usual methods emphasising control, security and as much marketing as possible. Their approach demonstrates that often – with the help of their own clever building logistics – a huge impact may be made with a minimum of financing.

Résumé:
The legacy of radio and the arts has spawned many forms of radical culture over the years, from early Modernist notions of the "Wireless imagination" and its subsequent vernacular tongues to Acoustic Ecology's call for "Radical radio". This contemporary history of radical radio addresses the transformation of this broadcast medium by recent breakthroughs in digital technology - from digital streaming to web radio and podcasting - paying special attention to the "transmission arts" in culture and politics. It includes creative and critical essays by historians, media theorists, radio producers and activists, coupled with artistic and audio projects by current avant-gardists Kabir Carter, Brandon LaBelle, James Sey and others. While "Modern" radio stitched together an electronic network by expanding outward, today's radio may fulfill Marshall McLuhan's idea of the global "extended nervous system" by networking individual lives on more of a cellular level. According to the authors, radio is no longer out there, in the ether, but inside us, transmitting intense stratifications of culture. Comes with audio CD

Résumé:
The December 2024 issue of a+u magazine features the work of Nikken Sekkei. Founded 125 years ago in 1900, the Nikkei Sekkei group is an organizational design firm with about 3,000 employees. Nikken Sekkei’s designers have worked on numerous building and urban design projects in Japan. When pursuing their work, what do they rely on? And what have they inherited from their predecessors? As we edited and prepared this issue for publication, we became increasingly interested in Nikken Sekkei’s floor plans and layout plans. Many of the designers who appear in this issue stressed the importance of floor plans and layout plans as a tool that anyone working hard on a project design can use to explore the needs of society and the client. This attitude toward design may be something that they feel they must pass on from one generation to the next as they grow in influence. Every project profile in this issue includes a 1/750 scale floor and layout plan.

Résumé:
"Diane Arbus: Sanctum Sanctorum" brings together forty-five photographs made in private places across New York, New Jersey, California, and London between 1961 and 1971. Through her singular combination of intelligence, charisma, intuition, and courage, Diane Arbus (1923–1971) was frequently invited into personal realms seldom seen by strangers. Though made in intimate settings, the photographs collected in this volume convey no sense of intrusion or trespass—instead, they reveal an unspoken exchange between photographer and subject, a moment of recognition in which confidences emerge freely and without judgment. Arbus’s desire to know people embraced a vast spectrum of humanity. Her subjects featured in Sanctum Sanctorum include debutantes, nudists, celebrities, aspiring celebrities, socialites, transvestites, babies, widows, circus performers, lovers, female impersonators, and a blind couple in their bedroom. Through a fresh consideration of little-known photographs among works that may be more familiar, this publication invites viewers to discover aspects of even well-known images that have previously gone unnoticed.

Résumé:
Renowned natural dyer, artist, and educator Sasha Duerr envisions a new age of fresh, modern color palettes, drawing from our original source of inspiration and ingredients-the natural world around us. This innovative plant-based color-guide includes twenty-five palettes with five hundred natural color swatches, providing inspiration for sustainable fashion, textiles, fine art, floral design, food, medicine, gardening, interior design, and other creative disciplines. Bring the healing power of forest bathing into your home with a palette of spruce cones, pine needles, and balsam branches. Move past Pantone and embrace the natural balance of a pollinator palette with Hopi sunflower, red poppy, echinacea, and scabiosa. Duerr complements the palettes with short essays that provide useful information. She connects the colors with particular landscapes, the restorative qualities of medicinal plants, common garden flora, lifestyle experiences, food and floral waste, and the ecological benefits of using organic materials to create colors. You may never view color-or your plants-the same way again.

Résumé:
The archives of the 1980s: 23 archives involved, 106 archival documents found, 6 original interviews, 1 horoscope from Gilardi's Phototeca in a poster size. Every person is a memory. Memory which may be conjured up by joining the dots between what the subject has experienced over the years, starting from a personal history—which allows for a certain clinical-narrative accuracy—only to then go on to delve into the collective sphere, investigating and recounting private and institutional archives that accompany us through the presentation of the facts. Home to the facts are the eras: that's why over the following issues Archivio will identify four decade-long containers. This issue continues Archivio's journey back through the twentieth century, stopping this time on the fluorescently outgoing, yet such intimate years of the 1980s—so close and yetso far. Because "a day is a year is a lifetime", as the R.W. Fassbinder's biography italian title says.
