In this book, the artist and photographer Maarten Vanvolsem explains how the strip technique can tell a different story of time and space in photographic images, a story that leads to new expressions and experiences of time and movement. The strip technique itself seems to be neglected in the debate on time and photography, although it has a long history — from Muybridge to the photo booth. Its use is widespread and, especially in recent years, more and more artists have rediscovered the technique. Based on an historical overview, a knowledge and understanding of the technique, and experiments with the building of cameras, this book will propose a new use of this forgotten art: a use in which the temporal terms "speed," “rhythm,” and “pace” are of more value than terms so often associated with photography such as “freeze,” “split second,” or “capture.” Within the book one can find more than thirty artists using the strip technique for their artistic practice. Vanvolsem shows how the technique may be used to rediscover the time-based possibilities of the photographic image.

Michael Wolf is best known for his large-size architectural shots from Hong Kong and Chicago. With his recently published book “Tokyo Compression”, which shows depressing impressions from the subway system in Tokyo, the photographer raises the question: In how far may, should or must photographers deal with the public today? Michael Wolf takes up this topic in his work “Street View”, which has been started at the same time as “Tokyo Compression”, and reinterprets the genre of the street photography in a highly unconventional way by using the almost inexhaustible picture pool of the Google Tool as basic material for his own images. With the camera in front of the screen he gets “his” images out of the automatically generated, authorless Google screens. Extreme details and geographical fade-ins of the software, which usually should serve the orientation, induce photographs which have an irritating as well as alarming effect like the underground portraits from Tokyo.

This unique book shows the results of this international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobile cultures found in a wide range of cities and countries, from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, to Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Holland. Pneumatic structures have been thoroughly investigated and developed during the 1960s. However, the energy crisis and aesthetic developments stopped the process of employing these structures as a mainstream construction method. Deflateables concentrates on the very limited knowledge of vacuum constructions and develops a range of aesthetic, technical and functional design possibilities. Until today, there has been a very limited number of designs developed and realized using pressurized constructions – despite the fact that this technology could lead to positive aspects: the air pressure of the earth can be used as a stabilizing and form-giving parameter, creating a specific and inspiring shape. In addition, the very nature of this technology offers varying degrees of thermal and acoustic insulation. Exploiting the possibilities of extremely light and, at the same time, energetically active constructions, deflateables are one of the promising fields of architectural and design developments. The chance to create structures that can move and react to requests such as user and climate requirements as well as formative demands, lifts this topic onto the level of a realistic and usable technology for as yet unknown design possibilities. Two volumes of the Imagine series are planned annually. Façades and Deflateables will appear in May 2008. Performance Driven Envelopes and Rapids will appear at the beginning of 2009.

Following Greenhouse Studies, Philippe Weisbecker's attention was drawn to other architectural structures, the ones visible on the outer walls of early 20th century industrial buildings. They are made of steel or concrete beams assembled together and holding an apparatus of bricks and mortar. Even though these structures may appear very similar for their overall shape, they differ greatly in order to ensure the weight distribution necessary to the stability of the edifice. The present portfolio is a sampler of some various structural beam combinations. It can be viewed as a book, spread by spread, or pinned on the wall, according to taste, the way a kid might stack up building blocks. Born in 1942, Weisbecker studied interior design in Paris. By 1968 he moved to New York. First working as a draftsman in an architectural firm, he started a career as an illustrator at the age of 30. His work has been published in major american publications such as the New York Times, Time magazine and The New Yorker among others. In the late 90's he shifted gradually from commissioned work to his own original production which he is now showing in galeries worldwide. Moving back to France in 2006, he is now sharing his time between Paris and Barcelona.
