Résumé:
"At last the mighty task is done; Resplendent in the western sun" These are the first lines of a poem by Joseph B. Strauss, Chief Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. Acknowledged as one of the most phenomenal architectural and natural monuments in the world, the iconic orange bridge spans the one-mile-wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. From the opening in 1937 until this day forward, the overpass has been photographed and illustrated immeasurable times, mystifying an achievement no one ever considered possible. Every year forty million vehicles travel between the orange cables, welcoming visitors from around the world. With "The bridge" Michael Yuan (CA) paints an intimate portrait of the Golden Gate Bridge, a challenge towards the well-known perspectives of the monument, often observed in its mind-blowing entirety and completeness. The bridge in all its characteristic faces that have never been presented before. A study of its form, lines, shapes and distinctive colour: the imposing towers, stylised street lamps, gigantic cables, bolts, plates – each with their own distinctive geometry and shape, colour, sound and light.

Résumé:
The construction of the Stuttgart-Ulm railway line is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. The centrepiece is the new Stuttgart Main Station, which replaces the former 16-track terminus station as an underground 8-track through station. As part of this, the aboveground tracks in the city centre are being removed and the areas thus freed up open up new urban-development perspectives. Stuttgart-East and Stuttgart-North – city districts previously separated by tracks – will be connected with each other again after over 150 years and travel time shortened. Christoph Ingenhoven (advised by, et al., Frei Otto) won the competition for the new design for the Stuttgart Main Station in 1997. After the financing agreement was concluded in April 2009, construction work was begun on 2 February 2010. The new main station is supposed to go into operation for the change in timetables in December 2026. Christoph Ingenhoven explains: "This project will have enormous significance for the development of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, and southwest Germany. The building must also do justice to this significance with its design – must show what Stuttgart is today and will be in future."

Résumé:
Fusing urban exploration with her trademark sense of wonder, famed videogame creator Ikumi Nakamura has spent over a decade infiltrating top-secret locations worldwide. Her daring escapades tap into a lost spirit of true adventure, proving that the world is still full of secrets and mystery, just waiting to be revealed. From derelict shipyards and military bases to colossal cooling towers, haunted hotels, and mystical islands, this book is packed with places you thought could only exist in videogames. Urban exploration is a way of life for those who choose it as their passion. The secrets and mysteries that disused places incite can be intoxicating and inspiring. As Nakamura has said, "I love breaking boundaries and making people say 'WOW.' As artists, we use our imagination to see the INVISIBLE." With a foreword by videogame designer-turned-photographer Liam Wong, "Project UrbEx" also features sections of Nakamura’s personal travel diaries, printed on pages with a narrower width in a rich Pantone black and illustrated by specially commissioned, exclusive manga—bringing her much-loved sense of humor to the forefront of the narrative and displaying her keen interest in exploring many mediums of creativity.

Résumé:
For members of the social elite in eighteenth-century England, extended travel for pleasure came to be considered part of an ideal education as well as an important symbol of social status. Italy, and especially Rome—a fashionable, exciting, and comfortable city—became the focus of such early tourists’ interest. In this distinctive book, historian Jeremy Black recreates the actual tourist experiences of those who traveled to Italy on a Grand Tour. Relying on the private diaries and personal letters of travelers, rather than on the self-conscious accounts of literary travelers who wrote for wider audiences, the book presents a fresh and authentic picture of how British tourists experienced Italy, its landscapes, women, food, music, Catholicism, and more. Using material from archives across Britain and a generous selection of illustrations, the book highlights the discrepancy between the idealized view of the Grand Tour and its reality: what people were meant to do was not necessarily what they did, what the guide books described as splendid was not always so perceived. Black discusses what Italian experiences meant to British visitors, and he considers the effects of tourism on British culture during this most exciting of centuries.

Résumé:
For years, tourists have trekked across cracked rock at Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano to witness the inspiring sight of creeping lava and its devastating effects on the landscape. In 2010, Eyjafjallajökull erupted in Iceland, stranding travelers as a cloud of ash covered western and northern Europe, causing the largest disruption of air travel since World War II. And just a few months later, Mount Merapi blew in Indonesia, killing over 350 people and displacing over 350,000 others, awakening people once more to the dangerous potential of these sleeping giants. Though today largely dormant, volcanoes continue to erupt across the world, reminding us of their sheer physical power. In Volcano, James Hamilton explores the cultural history generated by the violence and terrifying beauty of volcanoes. He describes the reverberations of early eruptions of Vesuvius and Etna in Greek and Roman myth. He also examines the depiction of volcanoes in art—from the earliest known wall painting of an erupting volcano in 6200 BCE to the distinctive colors of Andy Warhol and Michael Sandle’s exploding mountains. Surveying a number of twenty-first-century works, Hamilton shows that volcanoes continue to influence the artistic imagination.

Résumé:
Do Glaciers Listen? explores the conflicting depictions of glaciers to show how natural and cultural histories are objectively entangled in the Mount Saint Elias ranges. This rugged area, where Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory now meet, underwent significant geophysical change in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which coincided with dramatic social upheaval resulting from European exploration and increased travel and trade among Aboriginal peoples. European visitors brought with them varying conceptions of nature as sublime, as spiritual, or as a resource for human progress. They saw glaciers as inanimate, subject to empirical investigation and measurement. Aboriginal oral histories, conversely, described glaciers as sentient, animate, and quick to respond to human behaviour. In each case, however, the experiences and ideas surrounding glaciers were incorporated into interpretations of social relations. Focusing on these contrasting views during the late stages of the Little Ice Age (1550-1900), Cruikshank demonstrates how local knowledge is produced, rather than discovered, through colonial encounters, and how it often conjoins social and biophysical processes. She then traces how the divergent views weave through contemporary debates about cultural meanings as well as current discussions about protected areas, parks, and the new World Heritage site.

Résumé:
The practice of comparison is implicit in every act of imagining, representing, and studying urban experience. "Urban enigmas" contributes to recent interdisciplinary interest in cities by introducing comparison as a key methodology for urban cultural analysis. Contributors, part of the collaborative research project "The Culture of Cities : Montreal, Toronto, Dublin, and Berlin", address theoretical and methodological aspects of comparison, while case-studies examine the mutually constituted identities of Montreal and Toronto through examples of travel writing, public art, film festivals, theatrical performances, diasporic communities, ethnic festivals, and urban media. Comparison is shown to be not only something performed by experts but a deeply embedded, everyday social practice that contributes to the mutable identities of cities. "Urban enigmas" demonstrates that the accumulation of urban actions, encounters, experiences, and relationships create distinctive patterns that make it possible to recognize the particularity of cities. Contributors include Alan Blum (York), Kieran Bonner (St. Jerome's), Jenny Burman (McGill), Jean-François Côté (Université du Québec à Montréal), Michael Darroch (York), Nicholas DeMaria Harney (Western Australia), Kevin Dowler (York & Toronto), Dipti Gupta (Dawson College), Janine Marchessault (York), Jean-François Morissette (Université du Québec à Montréal), and Greg Nielsen (Concordia).
