Résumé:
As cities evolve and resources shift with time, spaces within those cities are often left fallow and abandoned. "Cyclical City" tells the stories behind these sites, from Philadelphia's Liberty Lands park to Lisbon's Green Plan, and it looks at the ways in which these narratives can be leveraged toward future engagement and use. Jill Desimini posits a fundamental role for spatial design practice to transform abandoned urban landscapes through time. She argues for approaches that promote the specific affordances of the land itself (hydrology, vegetation, topography, geology, infrastructural capacity, occupation potential); the importance of cyclical change; and the particularities of the cultural, political, and physical context. These themes are explored in five cities: Philadelphia, Berlin, Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Saint Louis, and across centuries, from periods of great upheaval to ones of relative stability and even economic growth.

Résumé:
This retrospective of the oeuvre of Petra Blaisse and her acclaimed studio Inside Outside presents a kaleidoscopic view of their work across interior, exhibition, and landscape design over the course of more than three decades. Rather than working solely on static buildings, Inside Outside design environments across a huge variety of scales, from expansive urban landscapes to intimate domestic spaces defined by soft textile walls. The resulting spaces defy conventional classification. This comprehensive survey encompasses renowned projects including the recently completed Taipei Performing Arts Center; the Kunsthal Rotterdam; Biblioteca degli Alberi in Milan, a park spanning almost ten hectares; and LocHal Library in Tilburg, a vast factory repurposed using an architecture of semi-translucent curtains. It also presents revelatory unrealised projects and explores the studio’s many collaborations, including the rich body of work produced with OMA since the late 1980s.

Résumé:
From humble prefabs to the colossal Park Hill in Sheffield, the number of English buildings listed for their special architectural and historical interest is truly staggering; since 1987 alone, more than 300 have received the honor. Every one of them appears here, with 350 color photos, right from the very first post-war residence listed: Sir Albert Richardson's Bracken House, built for the Financial Times in 1955-59 and originally threatened with demolition. Students, architects, tourists, and historians will all find it fascinating to learn about how the process works, its controversial extension to recent architecture, and how the choices are made. Every region in England is covered, with London divided into three areas. The buildings range from traditional works to internationally outstanding modern structures, and include Gibberd's Liverpool and Spence's Coventry Cathedral, the Smithson's Hunstanton School, and Taylor & Green's Norfolk housing.

Résumé:
The new building for Bayer’s company headquarters is innovative and transparent, functional yet sophisticated, embodying the ethos of this global concern. Indeed these were the factors which led Bayer to chose Helmut Jahn’s project in 1998. Comprising four storeys, the structure is semi-elliptical in shape. To the south it blends harmoniously with the Carl-Duisburg Park while to the north, a long garden pergola provides the link to the entry hall. In order to make maximum use of natural resources and minimize technical equipment the concrete structure has a twin shell facade, facilitating natural ventilation and optimizing daylight. This building skin regulates interior and exterior conditions and the integral heating and cooling system takes advantage of the low energy characteristics of water and the thermal storage capacity of concrete. This book portrays this structure in stunning duotone photographs, short texts and plans.

Résumé:
Parklife is an independent publication edited by Continente Editions about outdoor space, curated by Paola Ristoldo and Alessandro Furchino Capria. The magazine addresses stories of ordinary and uncommon places by developing visual and literary narratives. Driven by a primordial need to create, occupy and control a territory, human being becomes inhabitant of a place defined and circumscribed by and for himself. Why does humanity feel the need to design these spaces? How are they experienced? Through an authorial approach and with unpublished projects, thirteen artists and a confrontation between an architect and a designer explore the concept of the park understood as a place of daily life. All these visions make it possible to conceive green space and its inhabitants as an essential and united part of the city context. Parklife is a refuge from the urban sprawl.
