Résumé:
After World War I, architects around the world aspired to transcend national boundaries devastated by conflicts, resulting in a flurry of artistic creativity. In Japan, a generation of young architects strove to create "international architecture," or kokusai kenchiku, a product of increasing international travel and communication, growth of the mass media, and technological innovation. Ken Tadashi Oshima traces the many interconnections between architects from Japan, Europe, and America and their designs during the interwar years by examining the careers and buildings of three leading modernists in Japan: Yamada Mamoru (1894-1966), Horiguchi Sutemi (1895-1984), and Antonin Raymond (1888-1976).

Résumé:
In Invisible Oil, the artist Ernst Logar addresses the material petroleum and its importance as a basis of our modern civilization using the example of the Scottish petroleum metropolis Aberdeen. In the course of his work, the artist managed to get access to non public places of the North Sea based petroleum industry. The photographs taken and the correspondence with the petroleum companies, which are active there, are documented as well as the numerous artistic works developed and made of the material petroleum. These objects reflect our modern civilization’s dependency on petroleum and contemplate it in a haunting manner. The book also addresses the current economic and social situation of the oil-industry-dominated city of Aberdeen and possible problematic future scenarios.

According to some recent astrophysical theories, the Universe is largely composed of matter known as black or dark – ‘Dark Matter’ – because it does not react to light. This mysterious matter, invisible, undetectable, and in a way ‘hypothetical’, is the inspiration behind this book and the second solo exhibition of Abdelkader Benchamma (b 1975) at the galerie agnès b. This enigmatic name, conjuring both the scientific and the esoteric, directly reflects the artistic research and graphic experimentation which Benchamma reveals in his latest work.

Résumé:
Between 1969 and 1990, the Présence Panchounette collective banzaï-attacked the art world with an onslaught of press releases, flyers, irreverent and butthead deeds. Primarily active in Bordeaux, the group spread its actions on to the international art scene, whose aesthetic hypocrisies and ideological taboos it pinned down with jovial ferocity. The bravado of the Bordeaux-based collective would also anticipate movements born in the Eighties, like Appropriation and Neoconceptual art. Concerned with not smothering its verve in the pernicious Pandora trunk of compromise and mendacity, Présence Panchounette turned its back on honours and remained stone deaf to the attracting songs of institutional sirens, until it announced its disbanding in 1990.

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), renowned for his role in establishing Conceptualism and Minimalism as dominant art movements in the postwar era, is perhaps best known for his masterful and brilliantly colored wall drawings. Throughout his career, however, LeWitt also created many remarkable three-dimensional works suitable for display in outdoor settings. In this publication, which accompanies the first major career survey of LeWitt's "structures," the artist's modular works are traced from their simplest manifestation in a single large-scale cube through multiple variations, with examples from the 1960s through the 1990s. Works from the 1980s onward explore the three-dimensional possibilities of diverse geometric forms, such as stars, and the introduction of new materials, including concrete block and fiberglass, stimulating experimentation with non-geometric, irregular forms on an increasing scale.
