Résumé:
''The Women in Revolt!'' exhibition book is a crucial exploration of the wealth and diversity of work by women artists working in the 1970s and 1980s during a period of seismic social and political change. Across a wide variety of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, film and photography, this extensive exhibition catalogue reflects on how women's needs were marginalised within mainstream culture and reveals how artists used radical ideas and methods to confront issues that will resonate with contemporary audiences — from access to healthcare and class struggles to ecological disaster, racism and misogyny. Featuring essays on feminist film distribution, the visibility of Black and South Asian women artists, Section 28 and the AIDS pandemic, Greenham Common and the peace movement, and the intersection of punk, feminism and art, ''Women in Revolt!'' celebrates the full diversity of what was a highly creative, politically engaged and determined community of women that paved the way for future generations and, ultimately, changed the face of British culture.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s fantastic visions, to Richard Branson’s plans to offer commercial space travel by 2010, visionaries and entrepreneurs have long dreamed of how we will travel in the future. "Future tech: innovations in transportation" is a prescient look at how we will be moving forward over the coming decades. Whilst we are not yet travelling to work using jet-powered backpacks, the issue of transport in the future is becoming increasingly important. As roads have become more congested and the environment more fragile, the means of transport at our disposal seem less and less adequate. "Future tech" explores what designers and engineers around the globe are developing for the world of tomorrow. "Future tech" features prototypes already in the first stages of manufacture alongside more conceptual, speculative designs, as well as a history of mechanised transport and invention through the ages. There are chapters on public transport, road, air and water travel as well as personal mobility .

Résumé:
How and why America's inner cities have begun recovering from the pervasive crime and social disorder that plagued them only a decade ago. "Comeback Cities" shows how innovative, pragmatic tactics for ameliorating the nation's urban ills have produced results beyond anyone's expectations, reawakening America's toughest neighborhoods. In the past, big government and business working separately were unable to solve the inner city crisis. Rather, a blend of public-private partnerships, grassroots nonprofit organizations, and a willingness to experiment characterize what is best among the new approaches to urban problem solving. Pragmatism, not dogma, has produced the charter school movement and the police's new focus on "quality-of-life" issues. The new breed of big city mayors has welcomed business back into the city, stressed performance and results at city agencies, downplayed divisive racial politics, and cracked down on symptoms of social disorder. As a consequence, America's inner cities are becoming vital communities once again.

Résumé:
Chow offers an alternate vision to the conventional suburban housing that characterizes much of our domestic landscape. Her integrated, original approach to design sees the residential setting as a fabric of interrelated spaces that supports cultural diversity and change, promotes sharing in a setting, and sustains a more intense use of land. With its concise, informative text and illustrations--including photographs and Chow's drawings--"Suburban space" challenges architects, landscape architects, developers, and planners to reconceptualize suburban housing. Chow has made comparative studies of neighborhoods in Boston, Charleston, San Francisco, Levittown, Radburn, and housing by Rudolf Schindler and Irving Gill, as well as other residential settings. Her argument for a fabric of dwelling is founded not on generalizations about how people live but on documented observations of the particular ways in which people organize their daily lives. This book demonstrates how one of the most disparaged yet common types of housing in the United States can become more environmentally and culturally viable.

Résumé:
Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) aimed to make pictures that were, in her words, ''important and useful.'' Her decades-long investigation of how photography could articulate people’s core values and sense of self helped to expand our current understanding of portraiture and the meaning of documentary practice. Lange’s sensitive portraits showing the common humanity of often marginalized people were pivotal to public understanding of vast social problems in the twentieth century. Compassion guided Lange’s early portraits of Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as her depictions of striking workers, migrant farmers, rural African Americans, Japanese Americans in internment camps, and the people she met while traveling in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Drawing on new research, the authors look at Lange’s roots in studio portraiture and demonstrate how her influential and widely seen photographs addressed issues of identity as well as social, economic, and racial inequalities—topics that remain as relevant for our times as they were for hers.

Résumé:
"Urgent archives" argues that archivists can and should do more to disrupt white supremacy and hetero-patriarchy beyond the standard liberal archival solutions of more diverse collecting and more inclusive description. Grounded in the emerging field of critical archival studies, this book uncovers how dominant western archival theories and practices are oppressive by design, while looking toward the the radical politics of community archives to envision new liberatory theories and practices. Based on more than a decade of ethnography at community archives sites including the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), the book explores how members of minoritized communities activate records to build solidarities across and within communities, trouble linear progress narratives, and disrupt cycles of oppression. Caswell explores the temporal, representational, and material aspects of liberatory memory work, arguing that archival disruptions in time and space should be neither about the past nor the future, but about the liberatory affects and effects of memory work in the present.

Résumé:
Here Longstreth explores the early development of two kinds of retail space that have become ubiquitous in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century. One, external, is devoted to the circulation and parking of automobiles on retail premises. Longstreth analyzes the origins of this development in the 1910s and 1920s, with the super service station and then the drive-in market. The other type of space, internal, was introduced soon thereafter with the single-story supermarket. The most innovative aspect of the supermarket was how its interior was designed for high-volume turnover of a large selection of goods with a minimum of staff assistance. Longstreth focuses on Los Angeles, the principal center for the development of both kinds of space, during the period from the mid-1910s to the early 1940s. This richly illustrated study integrates architectural, cultural, economic, and urban factors to describe the evolution of retailing and how it has affected the urban landscape.

Résumé:
For all of the scholarship done on postcolonial literatures, little has been applied to Scandinavian writing. Yet, beginning with the onset of tourism beyond Scandinavia in the 1840s, a compelling body of prose works documents Scandinavian attitudes toward foreign countries and further shows how these Scandinavian travelers sought to portray themselves to uncharted cultures. Focusing on Danish and Norwegian travelogues, Elisabeth Oxfeldt traces the evolution of Scandinavian travel writing over two centuries using pivotal texts from each era, including works by Hans Christian Andersen, Knut Hamsun, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). Oxfeldt situates each one in its historical and geopolitical context, and her close readings delineate how each travelogue reflects Scandinavia’s ongoing confrontation between Self and the non-European cultural Other. A long-overdue examination of travel literature produced by some of Denmark and Norway’s greatest writers, this publication unpacks the unstable constructions of Scandinavian cultural and national identity and, in doing so, complicates the common assumption of a homogeneous, hegemonic Scandinavia.

Résumé:
The design of infrastructural networks—that is, roads, railways and any system that enables flow within a structure such as a city—is among urban design's foremost tasks. Around the globe, the awareness of enhanced infrastructure fluidity as a catalyst for economic development is rising. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure investigates how infrastructure design determines the organization and flow of the inhabited landscape—as an agency of enhanced mobility, as a design feature contributing to the character of a city and as a sound theoretical approach to a positive experience of collective space. These issues are explored in four chapters that catalogue these approaches, each chapter buttressed with key projects from the world's most important designers in this field, including Arata Isozaki, Paul Andreu, Xaveer De Geyter, Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill. The authors demonstrate how the creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design is essential to the effective flow of infrastructural networks.

Résumé:
From 2012 to 2014 a series of contemporary art exhibitions, events, and participatory forums organized by Galerija Nova, Tensta konsthall, and Grazer Kunstverein comprised the project “Beginning as Well as We Can (How Do We Talk about Fascism?).” Focusing on the startling increase of nationalism across Europe—made palpable in manifestations of fascist tendencies and the cult of heritage—the project points to the possibility and power of art to imagine futures that are not irrevocably determined by the present, but are invested with struggles fought here and now. Art and the F Word: Reflections on the Browning of Europe, edited by curator Maria Lind and the collective What, How & for Whom/WHW, continues the debate with contributions by cultural critics, curators, and artists, which articulate resistant and constructive possibilities of social and artistic production—investigating the language of politics and philosophy and also popular vocabularies, social contexts, media, science, and aesthetics.
