Résumé:
In this first critical history of the National Gallery of Canada, Douglas Ord explores how, in the gallery's development, art has consistently been linked to notions of religious truth, national spirit, and hallowed atmosphere, culminating in Moshe Safdie's design for the institution's current building. Integrating accounts of political intrigue and public controversy with philosophy, art theory, and architectural analysis, Ord provides vivid accounts of successive directors' struggles to obtain a permanent home for the nation's art. Ord looks at the gallery's historical and intellectual context - from 1910 when Eric Brown became the gallery's founding director, through Jean Sutherland Boggs, to Shirley Thomson - shedding light on its acquisitions, government policy towards the arts, and the public's deep-rooted suspicion of avant-garde art. In showing how Canadian art came to be housed in a building whose architectural and ideological sources include Gothic cathedrals, Islamic mosques, Egyptian temples, St Peter's Basilica, and the squared-stone facades of the Holy City of Jerusalem, The National Gallery of Canada insightfully explores the relationship of Canada's art and its National Gallery to the project of the Canadian nation state.

Résumé:
''The Devouring Eye: Photography and the Mouth'' is a provocative essay by Swiss photographer and academic Olivier Richon which rethinks the act of looking through the language of appetite, taste, and consumption. Drawn from a series of influential lectures delivered during his twenty-five-year tenure as Head of the Photography programme at the Royal College of Art (1997–2022) – a period during which the course shaped an entire generation of photographers – the book presents a meditation on the camera as both eye and mouth: an apparatus that ingests the world in order to produce images. Framed through a psychoanalytic lens, Richon proposes that photography is less a neutral act of observation than a form of visual incorporation. If looking maintains distance, the mouth abolishes it. The camera becomes a devouring organ, where the object is dissolved, digested, and made into an image. The desire to see becomes entangled with the desire to consume. Through this reading, photography is revealed as an insatiable medium – one that satisfies and frustrates our appetite for representation in equal measure. ''The Devouring Eye'' invites us to reconsider how we relate to images, and how deeply they live in us.

Résumé:
For those who have ever wondered why we have trees in cities or what makes the layout of cities like Paris and Amsterdam seem so memorable, "City trees: a historical geography from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century" by Henry W. Lawrence provides a comprehensive guide to the history of trees in urban landscapes. Covering four centuries of development in the cities of Europe and America, this book shows how trees became integral to urban landscapes by looking at the historical evolution of the spaces in which they were planted and how these spaces were used. Reflecting on the impact trees have had on what many consider to be the fundamental aspects of city life — people, buildings, social and economic activity — Lawrence draws on graphic materials, written descriptions, local histories, and archival research to provide a unique look at the treeís role in urban landscape history. Primarily concerned with aesthetics, power, and national traditions, Lawrence reflects on the differing impacts city trees have had on multiple aspects of culture, from their roles as symbols and their representation of economic prosperity to the differing ways nations planted their trees, which gradually blended into an international style of urban planting.

Résumé:
Photographic images can, apart from their capacity to show, convey an experience, a quality that has seldom been recognized. In this book, the artist and photographer Maarten Vanvolsem explains how the strip technique can tell a different story of time and space in photographic images, a story that leads to new expressions and experiences of time and movement. The strip technique itself seems to be neglected in the debate on time and photography, although it has a long history — from Muybridge to the photo booth. Its use is widespread and, especially in recent years, more and more artists have rediscovered the technique. Based on an historical overview, a knowledge and understanding of the technique, and experiments with the building of cameras, this book will propose a new use of this forgotten art: a use in which the temporal terms "speed," “rhythm,” and “pace” are of more value than terms so often associated with photography such as “freeze,” “split second,” or “capture.” Within the book one can find more than thirty artists using the strip technique for their artistic practice. Vanvolsem shows how the technique may be used to rediscover the time-based possibilities of the photographic image.

Résumé:
This book is a collection of essays at the intersection of architecture and climate change. Neither a collective lament nor an inventory of architectural responses, the essays consider cultural values ascribed to climate and ask how climate re? ects our conception of what architecture is and does. Which materials and conceptual infrastructures render climate legible, knowable, and actionable, and what are their spatial implications? How do these interrelated questions offer new vantage points on the architectural rami? cations of climate change at the interface of resiliency, sustain-ability, and ecotechnology? 'Climates' also contains a dossier of precedents for thinking about architecture and climate change drawn from a number of leading practitioners. New approaches to understanding climate in architecture make this book invaluable. This publication is a project by The Avery Review, a journal produced by the Of?ce of Publications at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

In a time when an estimated 1.2 billion people across the world lack access to secure housing, how are cities working to empower and promote the inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, disability and economic status? How is affordable housing bridging economic gaps across different social, political and cultural geographies, particularly for the 900 million individuals who live in slums? This volume explores the interface of social justice and city making through comparative discussions from Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, as well as North, Central and South America. The thirty-six essays in this collection include conversations with influential administrators and civic leaders such as Somsook Boonyabancha and Jaime Lerner, with commentaries on transformative initiatives such as “Child Friendly Cities,” and “Women for the World,” and case studies of exemplary projects by globally known architects and planners such as Alejandro Aravena and MVRDV.

Résumé:
"Megaprojects and Risk" provides the first detailed examination of the phenomenon of megaprojects. It is a fascinating account of how the promoters of multi-billion dollar megaprojects systematically and self-servingly misinform parliaments, the public and the media in order to get projects approved and built. It shows, in unusual depth, how the formula for approval is an unhealthy cocktail of underestimated costs, overestimated revenues, undervalued environmental impacts and overvalued economic development effects. This results in projects that are extremely risky, but where the risk is concealed from MPs, taxpayers and investors. The authors not only explore the problems but also suggest practical solutions drawing on theory, experience and hard, scientific evidence from the several hundred projects in twenty nations and five continents that illustrate the book. Accessibly written, it will be the standard reference for students, scholars, planners, economists, auditors, politicians and interested citizens for many years to come.

Résumé:
This book examines the fierce debate on the styles and forms of garden design that took place in England c. 1870–1914. Focusing on the wild garden, the cottage garden, the formal garden and the synthesis of the formal and natural styles, Anne Helmreich argues that design principles and debates between designers including William Robinson, Reginald Blomfield, Gertrude Jekyll, and Edwin Lutyens, were indelibly shaped by the quest for a powerful English national identity. She demonstrates how ‘Englishness’ was purportedly expressed through the leading styles of garden design and why the garden was promoted as a symbol of national identity. A wide range of cultural practices and institutions, from garden treatises, popular journals, historic preservation organizations, art exhibitions, and two world’s fairs, are investigated to reveal how the garden, as a physical artifact and as an idea, circulated widely to produce a unifying national image.

Résumé:
''Fortress Power'' presents a genealogy of fortification as a material and political technology intent on obstruction, tracing its implementation across battlefields, borders, and urban environments. Drawing on the influential work of philosophers Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, Derek S. Denman places the fortress alongside the archetypes of the prison and the camp, citing them as paradigmatic of how space is transformed into a tool of domination and control. Focusing on the defensive architecture of bastion fortresses, urban design, and border landscapes, ''Fortress Power'' charts the rise of a form of governance grounded in hostility, extending the scope of its subject from a piece of military construction to a much broader political concept. Detailing how power manifests in everything from city centers to international boundaries, the book analyzes the logic of fortification as it moves through various contexts in the advancement of surveillance, exploitation, warfare, and political authority.
