Résumé:
Though during the last century concrete and brick have played the leading role in construction, AV Proyectos 124 takes a stand for wood as a powerful alternative. This view is supported by architects and professors like Óscar Linares, who comments on the seven international projects contained in the dossier; or the Madrid-based team of Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano, of SUMA Arquitectura, which we have interviewed here on their pioneering experience using structural timber in Spain. The issue continues with the competition porposals for the remodelling of the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (SMAK) in Ghent, by David Kohn and noAarchitecten, and the work in process for the new Benin National Assembly in Porto Novo, by Francis Kéré, closing with Luis Fernández-Galiano’s review of Fischer von Erlach’s Project of a Historical Architecture, recently re-edited.

Résumé:
This work intends to be a critical assessment of world architecture in our global times: both a 'state of the art' and a 'state of the planet', centered on the period opened by the Fall of the Berlin Wall. After an introduction on Spain as a laboratory of global architecture, ten long chapters written by prominent experts explore the different regions of the world. Each section is rounded off with sentative works of the area in question, completed between 1990 and 2007, that is, circa 2000. The regions mapped follow the civilizations identified by Huntington. However, this distribution does not demand acknowledging that religious and cultural fault lines are more important that the homogeneity brought about by globalization, with the spread of sprawl and spectacle as the two main traits of the contemporary architectural and urban landscape.

Résumé:
Spain was one of the countries where the practice of architecture has been most affected by the economic crisis. There are few places on earth where such large numbers of buildings were built in such a short period of time. The lack of reflection over whether these projects were necessary or valid resulted in the subsequent abandonment of many buildings when their completion or maintenance was discovered not to be economically viable. Their appearance throughout Spanish territories has generated a collection of unfinished buildings where the factor of time was eliminated from the formula for making architecture. The publication gathers examples of architecture produced during the past few years, born out of renunciation and economy of means, designed to evolve and adapt to future necessities and trusting in the beauty conferred by the passage of time.

Résumé:
Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Drew Philip calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline`s four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the world`s greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed elsewhere in architecture. This book provides the perfect introduction to Ando`s work, including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, and in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA.

Résumé:
An intense work developed from their studios in Madrid and Berlin, six large built works and another six currently nearing completion, testify to the importance of these last twelve years in the professional career of Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano. A trip from the north to the south of Spain allows Richard Ingersoll to introduce the issue with a critical analysis of the complete oeuvre of the architects. Projects include the La Luz Castle in Las Palmas, the Madinat al-Zahra Museum near Córdoba, the San Gregorio Museum in Valladolid, the Moritzburg Museum in Halle, the new folding roof of the Kastner & Öhler department store in Graz, the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastiàn, the Congress Center in Zaragoza, the Contemporary Art Center in Córdoba, the Joanneum Museum in Graz, an intervention in the old Barceló Market area in Madrid.
