Taking Genoa and Berlin as typological examples, a toal of 22 individual house plans were drawn up in the context of an experiment in design ; each represents a fresh, creative planning possibility in view of the current redensification of urban space. The publication documents the assignments and results of a European project carried out among students of architecture in Postdam and Genoa under the overall diection of Klaus Theo Brenner. The resulting designs are complementaring one to another to generate an image of the street which is, in the tradition of the " strada nuova " in Genoa, developing to a magnificient project for the ideal city.

The illustrations have been meticulously preserved and the facts updated for the twenty-first century. The illustrations, coupled with Sasek’s playful narrative, make perfect souvenirs that will delight both children and parents. "This is Greece" captures the flavor and tradition of the birthplace of Western civilization. There’s Athens, with its spectacular views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, temples, theaters, and marketplaces; architecture-renowned Corinth; Mycenae, inhabited since 3000 B.C.; Olympia, home of the gods; Delphi, famous for its legendary oracle; and the beautiful isles. There’s also modern-day Greece, where life is lived on street corners, in squares, and at tables amid reminders of the past.

David Hicks' attitudes are revealed in these writings on garden design and on the gardens and styles which he admires. "What I have sought to achieve, all through my working life," he writes, "is a liaison between the past and the present day whilst maintaining a practical but somewhat experimental attitude to outdated tradition. I have attempted to introduce a lot of today and some of tomorrow whilst always keeping appropriateness and the client's requirements foremost in my mind. . . form and innovation are always of vital importance to produce style." "My Kind of Garden" is well illustrated with photographs of gardens he designed as well as gardens from around the world which particularly appealed to his very personal sense of good taste.

In this book, historian Lorraine Daston traces the development of rules in the Western tradition and shows how they have evolved from ancient to modern times. Drawing on a rich trove of examples, including legal treatises, cookbooks, military manuals, traffic regulations, and game handbooks, Daston demonstrates that while the content of rules is dazzlingly diverse, the forms that they take are surprisingly few and long-lived. Rules have been devised for almost every imaginable activity and range from meticulous regulations to the laws of nature. Daston probes beneath this variety to investigate when rules work and when they don’t, and why some philosophical problems about rules are as ancient as philosophy itself while others are as modern as calculating machines.

Résumé:
Chicago is a city dedicated to the modern—from the skyscrapers that punctuate its skyline to the spirited style that inflects many of its dwellings and institutions, from the New Bauhaus to Hull-House. Despite this, the city has long been overlooked as a locus for modernism in the arts, its rich tradition of architecture, design, and education disregarded. Still the modern in Chicago continues to thrive, as new generations of artists incorporate its legacy into fresh visions for the future. Chicago Makes Modern boldly remaps twentieth-century modernism from our new-century perspective by asking an imperative question: How did the modern mind—deeply reflective, yet simultaneously directed—help to dramatically alter our perspectives on the world and make it new?

Résumé:
This wide-ranging survey showcases and analyzes the work of dozens of Modernist designers, from those who established the International Style in the 1920s and ‘30s through the groundbreaking practitioners of the mid-1940s. Modernism, with its powerful aesthetic and compelling philosophical framework, is the twentieth century’s most defining movement in design and the applied arts. International architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright revolutionized the built world and how we live in it. Their work rejected historical precedents, prioritizing function over tradition, and their experimentation with new forms, materials, and techniques transformed our living spaces and lifestyles and fundamentally changed the way we think about design.
