The photographer best known for his extensive, insightful documentation of "the American social landscape"-from jazz musicians to factory hands to New York pedestrians and office workers zoning out at their keyboards-has recently been spending more time looking at the literal, natural landscape. His 2005 MoMA retrospective showed, for the first time, a new series of landscapes made in the American west, while for "Olives and apples", he has looked back over the last decade’s work and culled a forest, tree by tree. His docile subjects, apple trees photographed in New York State and olive trees photographed in France, Italy and Spain from 1997-2004, are presented in circumstances ranging from sunny, leafy summer health to glittering winter ice-storm glory. Some of the most striking compositions are shot from just inside the reach of a tree’s furthest twigs, so that expanding branching limbs fill the frame, stretching out around the viewer.

Over the last years, coinciding with the growing social movement that aims for the introduction of a real environmental sensitivity in the European society, a new generation of architects has appeared in Spain. They plan and built using passive design strategies, use techniques to reduce both water consumption and waste production and even generate energy from the active use of renewable energies. Selected projects included: Botanical Garden of Montjuic in Barcelona and the Western Beach Promenade in Benidorm (Alicante), by Carlos Ferrater; the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo 2005 Aichi (Japan), by Farshid Moussavi and Alejandro Zaera, as well as the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo Zaragoza 2008, by Franciso J. Last 2007 La Casa Encendida organised the Sueño de Casa Propia (Dream of a Home of One’s Own) exhibition, curated by María Inés Rodríguez, in which a series of reflections on housing by artists, designers and architects served as the basis for an analysis of how different contexts produce different strategies for resolving the issue of access to housing. Parallel to the exhibition, a seminar entitled Housing and Domestic Space in the 21st Century was organised. Coordinated by Juan Herreros, an architect and lecturer at the Madrid University School of Architecture, the seminar brought together a group of intellectuals from both Spain and abroad for discussions on this theme. The ultimate aim of the seminar was to raise awareness about architecture’s potential role in the current and evident transformation of lifestyles. With the collaboration of: Raúl Cárdenas, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Vicente Guallart, Hans-Walter Müller, Philippe Rahm, Alejandro Aravena, Robert Kronenburg, Colin Davies and Enric Ruiz-Geli.
