This book starts with the premise that waste is inevitable in human society—and ends with a meditation on its inevitability. The Idea of Waste explores how we have grappled with both the material reality and the specter of this shapeshifting phenomenon throughout history—utilizing it, dreaming of overcoming it, yet never escaping it. John Scanlan explores what waste is and why it seems to be intrinsic to human life, at every turn, in every age and epoch. Finally, he demonstrates how waste never disappears, but rather only proliferates anew. Scanlan’s compelling narrative shows waste to be both an enduring material consequence of human activity and an idea or state of being.

Résumé:
Find hope to heal the relationship between our planet and all of its inhabitants, including humans, animals, and plants. Essays, visual narratives, and interviews explore practices of care and present possibilities for living differently in a fragile age. Artists and culture bearers consider bonds of love, responsibility, and reciprocity, encouraging consideration of our inherent interdependence with one another, with other creatures, and with the planet itself. This anthology looks at how life, including plant, animal, and human life, can thrive through acts of harmony. In "How to survive", women and non-binary voices present ideas of interdependence, place-based knowledge, attentiveness, liberatory imagination, mending, repair, and activism offering visions of hope and adaptation, as well as novel ways of understanding our responsibilities to the planet.

Résumé:
Founded by Fredric Benesch and Katarina Lundeberg in 2009, Stockholm-based firm In Praise of Shadows Architecture engages in a wide range of projects of varied scales and typologies. This first monograph on their work features some forty buildings and projects from the years 2009 to 2024. The selection includes small boathouses and garden pavilions, private homes, and housing developments, as well as retail spaces, schools, and library buildings. The ideas and designs of In Praise of Shadows Architecture are remarkable, revealed in buildings that share an elegant signature that manifests itself in the choice and shaping of materials and a focus on the spatial experience. Many of them are timber constructions, as sustainability is a core part of their philosophy, as well as a special interest in Swedish modernist heritage and the famous architectural culture of the Swiss canton of Grisons.

Résumé:
Zhang Pengju’s buildings explore the intersection of architecture and landscape as topographical art. His architectural practice is deeply rooted in the terrain and local history of China’s Inner Mongolia region and at the same time embodies contemporary architecture at its best. He engages in defining and cultivating topographical order and demonstrates how creative thinking can transform the fragments of our living conditions and our lives into images of a unified world. The seventeen realized designs featured in "Genuine construction" exemplify the architect’s approach. Each project is introduced by a concise text and presented through color photographs, plans, drawings, and sketches showing the use of natural materials, smooth lines, and humble models that skillfully blend these buildings into their surroundings. A foreword by David Leatherbarrow, professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania’s Stuart Weitzman School of Design, and essays by Chem Zhao, professor at Nanjing University’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and Yonggao Shin, associate professor at Southeast University’s School of Architecture in Nanjing, round out this monograph.

Résumé:
"aphasia" is divided into the four seasons, ver (spring), hiems (winter), autumnus (fall), and aestas (summer), symbolizing in this context the various stages that bridge the moments before, during, and after transformational moments. The linearity of the seasons is disrupted throughout the book through the use of translucent pages, highlighting their transformation. In ver the book opens with a stream of dreamy and very light images, representing peace and stasis, these are the moments before. In hiems, the pallet turns very cold, the images are set on black, with various figures in states of flight or distress. Autumus presents moments of both discovery and decay, dual aspects of healing processes, and finally, aestas, features a return to the vitality of the outside world.

Résumé:
The cradle-to-cradle principle envisions buildings returning to the natural cycle after use. In practice, however, most are only partially composed of natural or compostable materials. One notable exception is Florian Nagler’s Garden House, winner of the Detail Award, which closely follows this principle. Another route is the reuse or refurbishment of components from demolished buildings. But this, too, is complex – components are often scarce and costly to extract and and make fit for new applications. To facilitate recycling, some structures are being designed for disassembly. Yet even timber joints fixed with screws can prove difficult to undo after years in place. A research group in Arles sees itself as a recycler of remnants, developing new materials from construction debris and agricultural waste: sunflower stalks become acoustic panels, while rice straw from cultivation is turned into insulation. The team also experiments with local resources: in nearby salt pans, salt crystallises on metal racks to form tiles, while algae are used to make lamps, vases, and wall finishes. Architecture made from rubble, clad in salt, rice, and seaweed – a compelling vision of the future. Perhaps the most promising path lies in combining these diverse strategies.
