Issue 229 of the magazine Quaderns explores the theme of the border in its literal sense -the border as a political and cultural separation between countries or geographical areas- but also as a place which gives rise to cultural crossovers alongside its function as separator. This issue looks firstly at the transformation of two formerly divided cities, Berlin and Beirut, which are currently undergoing processes of integration of what used to be opposing sectors and of recovery as city-centre spaces of the wastelands generated by division. Then it analyses the present-day situation in two border areas characterised by strong economic and cultural contrasts between the two sides of the dividing line: the border between the United States and Mexico, and the Strait of Gibraltar. The works of architects and artists who have recently worked in these places are taken as a starting point for debate about the strategies brought to bear in frontier territory by urbanism, art and architecture. The issue includes an introductory text by Saskia Sassen and features Mathias Sauerbruch on Berlin, Álvaro Siza on Ceuta, Rafael Moneo and Ousama Kabbani on Beirut, and Gloria Anzaldúa on the border between Mexico and the United States. It also presents a series of works actually carried out in these cities by Sauerbruch & Hutton, Álvaro Siza and Rafael Moneo, along with projects by Berger-Parkinnen, Kollhof & Kollhoff, Gustav Lange, OMA/Rem Koolhaas and Peter Zumthor, among others, and features a dossier with projects carried out in other countries by Catalan architects, including works by Miralles-Tagliabue, J. Ll. Mateo and Elías Torres. The theme is completed by an extensive photo reportage by Camilo José Vergara about the Mexican border.

In this book he looks at eight of his contemporaries -- all architects of international stature -- and discusses the theoretical positions, technical innovations, and design contributions of each. Moneo's discussion of these eight architects -- James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and the partnership of Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron -- has the colloquial, engaging tone of a series of lectures on modern architecture by a master architect; the reader hears not the dispassionate theorizing of an academic, but Moneo's own deeply held convictions as he considers the work of his contemporaries. Discussing each of the eight architects in turn, Moneo first gives an introductory profile, emphasizing intentions, theoretical concerns, and construction procedures. To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Alvar Aalto, one of the most important figures in architectural history, this exhibition will showcase the extensive body of work he created with his two wives, Aino and Elissa. The Aaltos revolutionised the humanist aspect of modern architecture by grounding it in an organic connection to nature, producing countless designs in the process. Between the two world wars, the Aaltos helped to create an identity for the young Finnish nation. They participated in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture and the Paris and New York exhibitions and designed masterpieces such as the Viipuri Library (now in Russia), Villa Mairea in Finland, Baker House in the United States and Maison Carré in France. Following the introduction of antibiotics, their Paimio Sanatorium set an example to the world by demonstrating how spaces could be made healthier and more accessible, through studies of solar incidence, natural ventilation and silent washbasins. Sanatorium is one of the thirteen Aalto-designed projects currently proposed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The book accompanying the exhibition features a preface by António Choupina, director of the Architecture Department at the Serralves Foundation and curator of the exhibition, and Jukka Savolainen, director of the Alvar Aalto Museum. It also includes contributions from architect Álvaro Siza and Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, professor emeritus at Aalto University, Helsinki, and writer.
