Safety Materials Destabilize Park

#39. Safety Materials Destabilize Park

Ball/Play

A “pleasure garden” constructed out of typical safety materials designed for dangerous conditions. In Safe Zone, impact-absorbing rubber, traction strips, and post padding were used to create a strange playground environment: an aggressive garden of safety materials. The poured rubber surface often used in playgrounds to cushion falls can create a destabilizing floor that, ironically, makes it difficult to stand up straight. StoSS Landscape Urbanism was founded in 2000 to work in the emerging field of landscape urbanism and address sites from a broad ecological, infrastructural, and socio-cultural perspective.
