Scope and Content

The Pierre du Prey fonds documents Pierre du Prey’s work as a researcher and writer on the history of architecture. The fonds contains documents related to his work for "The Villas of Pliny: from antiquity to posterity," published in 1994, and a catalog he produced on Ockham Park in Surrey, England, for Phyllis Lambert’s 90th birthday in 2016. The fonds also documents chapters or articles du Prey wrote for four separate publications on the history of architecture published between 2015-2020. The material includes notes, du Prey’s manuscripts, dummy versions of his publications, correspondence, and financial documents related to publishing.

Furthermore, the fonds contains general correspondence sent and received by du Prey regarding his research and his work as an architectural historian. It is also comprised of texts for lectures he gave, notes, programs and proceedings for conferences he attended as well as correspondence, invitations and press clippings from or about the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

Biographical notes

Pierre de la Ruffinière du Prey was born in 1943. He graduated with a B.A. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965 and completed a qualifying year at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London from 1965 to 1966. He went on to earn an M.F.A. and Ph. D. from Princeton (1969, 1973). He has been a faculty member at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, since 1971 and served as Acting Head of the Department of Art from 2000-2001. From 1980 to 1986 he took on several roles at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal (CCA). During his tenure as Director of Study Programs at the CCA (1982-1984), he was guest curator of the exhibition “Les Villas de Pline et les éléments classiques dans l’architecture à Montréal”, presented at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal from October 14-December 11, 1983. In 1994, his book, "The Villas of Pliny: from antiquity to posterity," was published by The University of Chicago Press. Starting in 1979 he conducted research on an album of drawings in the CCA’s collection related to Ockham Park, a house in Surrey, England.

The Pierre du Prey fonds was acquired from Pierre du Prey by the CCA in 2004. Further additions to the fonds were later received between 2007 and 2020 from Pierre du Prey.
