Major cities in Canada and elsewhere are adopting new zoning and urban strategies that set out a vision of intermediate urban densification, allowing for growth on top of existing structures and shaping where and how new development may occur. This shift prompts critical questions about who truly benefits from these changes. This event explores whether airspace in Montréal could be understood not only as private property but also as a shared urban resource.
Brique par Brique invites planners, architects, community organizers, and residents from Montréal to explore how collective ownership and participatory design can reshape density in the service of equity, affordability, and the common good. Together, we will confront the challenges of displacement, speculation, and spatial justice while asking: what tools, policies, and partnerships can reclaim the sky above us for housing and community use?
Through a panel discussion and mapping workshop, we invite you to an afternoon of reimagining air rights as commons, and to envision new pathways for upward growth rooted in community stewardship rather than privatization.
As space is limited, registration is required. If the activity you are interested in is full, do not hesitate to arrive ten minutes in advance to register on a waiting list. It is possible that places will become free before the beginning of the activity.
Brique par Brique is a community land trust founded in 2016 by community organisers. Based in Parc-Extension, they respond to the need for affordable housing and community spaces with innovative, justice-driven approaches in a diverse and rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.
