Physical characteristics and technical requirements:

- Contemporary binding consists of brown leather-covered corners and spine and brown cloth-covered boards with gilt trim. Album comprises 82 albumen silver prints making up 69 individual photographs and 6 panoramas mounted on 71 light yellowish brown cardboard pages, 3 inscribed title pages including the front flyleaf, and 67 unused pages including the back flyleaf. Pages 18, 55, 57-58 and 85 are detached. Page 1, which is also the front flyleaf, is inscribed: "JAPAN.", page 49 is inscribed: "CHINA.", and page 83 is inscribed: "STRAITS OF MALACCA.", all by an unknown hand, in black ink, at centre. The album is accompanied by a detached sheet inscribed with a hand-written table of contents.
