Planning and Cities
"One of the more important but enigmatic figures of the modern planning movement is Tony Garnier (1869-1948). Little is known about his life, or about the influences on him which led to his creation of the project on which his fame now rests, the Cité Industrielle. Only in a recent work by Christophe Pawlowski, Tony Garnier et les débuts de l'urbanisme fonctionelle en France (Paris, 1967), do the known pertinent facts about Garnier seem to be discussed in any detail. Because this work, as, indeed, most literature on Garnier, stresses the contribution of the Cité to later twentieth-century city planning, it is the purpose of our book to discuss Garnier's work as a product of its particular environment, and to investigate its place as a bridge both between nineteenth- and twentieth-century planning theory and between academic and nonacademic architectural theories and techniques. Sections of the followings discussion are based on my article, "Utopian Aspects of Tony Garnier's Cité Industrielle," which appeared in the March, 1960, issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. I am indebted to M. Louis Weckerlin, architecte-en-chef of Lyons, who many years ago generously shared with me his wealth of knowledge about Garnier's work and attitudes. I would also like to thank George R. Collins of Columbia University, who from time to time has encouraged me in my interest in Tony Garnier." -- Preface
