"Lowe's Bibliographical Account of English Theatrical Literature, published in 1888, has long been regarded as a standard reference book in its own field and indispensable to any student of theatrical history. Published in a limited edition, it has been out of print for many years, and has become very scarce, second-hand copies commanding a high price. The need for a new edition has been widely felt, and The Society for Theatre Research has accepted responsibility for re-issuing the book. The work of revision has been undertaken by scholars working in libraries on both sides of the Atlantic, and has extended over a period of some fifteen years. The inclusion of books and editions that have come to light since the publication of the original work, and the extension of the period covered to the end of the 19th century have so enlarged the work as to make it virtually a new compilation. The total number of entries amounts to over 5,000, which is more than twice as many as are in Lowe's original work. The entries are arranged in chronological order, under classified headings, with Indexes to Authors, Titles and Places of Publication."--from the inside front flap.
