Summary:

"While the poster was primarily designed to sell a product, service, or idea, it has always attracted major painters and designers. This was particularly true at the end of the nineteenth century, when Bonard, Lautrec, and the more prolific Chéret, Grasset, Steinlen, and Mucha were all producing inspired work in France, and the outstanding names in England and the United States were Aubrey Beardsley, the Beggarstaffs, Penfield, and Will Bradley. From these pioneers of the art, Harold F. Hutchison traces the development of the pictorial poster through Europe and America to the great international expansion after the Second World War, when nationalist schools tended to disappear before a far broader approach to the subject ... Mr. Harold Hutchison has compiled a new international survey of the whole field of posters from 1860 to the "psychedelic" examples of today. His stimulating text is supported by a selection of about 220 of the finest examples of the art from all over the world during the last 100 years, of which 40 are in full color"--Dust jacket.
