Summary:

Until very recently, colonial art and architecture in Latin America has been a greatly neglected and underestimated phenomenon. All too often it has been misunderstood as an empty imitation of European forms, debased by intellectual poverty. One of the books which led to an appreciation of the grandeur and beauty of this colonial art, as well as to an understanding of its complex history, was this book by the renowned art historian Pál Kelemen. Mr. Kelemen, whose pioneer work has been recognized by many academic and governmental honors, has provided an illuminating evaluation and pictorial panorama of colonial baroque and rococo. Geographical and historical in organization, this set investigates historical antecedents, ideological background, diffusion of European styles, reemergence of non-European traits, appearance of new styles, and similar material. The cultural history of each area is considered, and for specific buildings and artifacts precise dating and attribution is given, where possible. While stress is on religious architecture and church furnishings, Mr. Kelemen also covers painting, portraiture and other forms. Illustrating the detailed text, in a separate volume, are more than 750 photographs on 192 plates. These show churches, secular buildings, altars, crucifixes, santos, processional masks, painting, carving, and decorative detail, ranging from Mexico to Brazil and Peru. Since much of this material has been destroyed or altered in recent years, Mr. Kelemen's photographs now provide a unique record of artistic achievement.
