Summary:

The story of the Guggenheims in America, Milton Lomask notes, is essentially a study in daring. This quality of boldness, together with other attributes, enabled Meyer Guggenheim and his sons to amass a fortune (one estimate: a quarter of a billion dollars) in the less than a half century since the father, a pack on his back, started his business career as an immigrant peddler. The quality of daring is also evident in the way Meyer Guggenheim's sons spent at least part of their money. There are more than 10,000 foundations in this country, but few have been endowed with the inspiration that has generally characterized the Guggenheim foundations. Lomask tells about five of the Guggenheim foundations, including the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation, which today devotes most of its funds to the advancement of the aerospace sciences; the John Simon Memorial Foundation, which awards the coveted fellowships popularly known as "the Guggenheims"; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which operates the Guggenheim Museum. Mr. Lomask does more than give facts and figures, He presents a fascinating account of the men and women who made these foundations possible and of the many persons whose work the foundations helped bring to fruition.
