Summary:

"This is the first survey of modern church architecture to appear in paperback form. It contains about 140 pictures illustrating some of the finest achievements of the last forty years in twelve different countries. Each church is represented not only by photographs of the interior and exterior but also by a plan and in many cases by a site plan as well. The pictures are accompanied by a clear, informative text, which discusses the needs of the community the church was built for, and describes what the architect was attempting to do. Most of the churches chosen are the results of the conjunction of two movements--the Liturgical Movement in the Church and the Modern Movement in architecture. But authors--themselves practising church architects--explain in their introduction that 'there is no typical modern church' and they show here a wide variety of architectural styles. At the same time they make it clear that style in itself is not an indication of quality, for architectural quality depends on a building's 'aptness' at all levels of the activity it houses, and its relevance to its environment, the kind of culture of which it is the product, and the material with which it is constructed."
