Tilly, Bertha.
Vergil's Latium.
Oxford, B. Blackwell, 1947.
xv, 123 pages plates, maps, plans 23 cm
The researches of which this volume is a record were carried out between the years 1933 and 1939. They represent topographical studies of the coastal district of the Roman Campagna (known as Latium to the Romans) with reference to the last six books of the Aeneid. The majority of the photographs were taken before 1939, but none is later than April of that year. During the past war, the allied armies, advancing on Rome from the south, passed through all this land, leaving behind them the havoc and destruction of modern mechanized warfare. It has not yet been possible to learn details of losses or survivals in this peculiarly Vergilian country. This monograph therefore presents the Campagna in all its tranquillity, seclusion, and beauty of pre-war days. -- Preface.
