First edition of an extremely rare treatise on character and taste in gardens by the French painter Watelet. Watelet was a close friend of François Boucher and Hubert Robert, both contemporary French painters who share Watelet's interest in gardens. Watelet was also acquainted with J. J. Rousseau, and the ideas expressed in Essai are certainly infused with Rousseauesque sentiments of simplicity and naturalness. There are chapters on country estates, ferme ornée (ornamental hedgerow), old and modern parks, flowers, rocks, trees, water, spaces, and poetic romantic, pleasure, and picturesque gardens. Not in Lindley Library Catalogue, Brunet, Hunt, Graesse, or Plesch.
